Earnhardt gives Redskins a ride


Dale Earnhardt Jr., driver of the Hendrick Motorsports No. 88, stopped at Richmond Raceway Aug. 8 in advance of the track’s NASCAR weekend in September. He was joined by five players from the Washington Redskins, who were in town for the team's training camp, which concluded Aug. 14. The day in Richmond gave Earnhardt and the Redskins players an opportunity to see how the athletes compete in their respective sports.

READ Center a finalist for $25k grant


The READ Center is a top-200 cause finalist in State Farm’s Neighborhood Assist program, making it eligible to earn a $25,000 grant to support adult literacy in the Richmond region. The 40 organizations from across the nation with the most votes will win grants.

The READ Center, based in Henrico, provides classroom instruction and one-to-one tutoring to adults with very low literacy.

Glen Allen wins 2 of first 3 games at 14U Babe Ruth World Series


The host Glen Allen 14-year-old all-star baseball team won two of its first three games in pool play at the 14-year-old Babe Ruth World Series, which is it hosting at RF&P Stadium in Glen Allen. The team beat the Midwest Plains champions, 9-4, in its first game Aug. 10, then topped the Southwest champions, 7-3, Aug. 11 before dropping a 5-4 result to the Ohio Valley champions.

Solar eclipse to impact region in one week


AUG. 14, 11:30 A.M. – The first cross-country solar eclipse since the advent of the automobile and creation of the free interstate system will be visible throughout much of the country next Monday, Aug. 21. In the Richmond region, most people will experience about 85 percent obstruction of sunlight when the moon passes between the Earth and the sun.

The event will begin at 1:18 p.m. local time and conclude at 4:03 p.m. During that time, looking at the sun without specially designed protective glasses could result in significant eye damage or even blindness.

Henrico Doctors’ Hospital recently was recognized by U.S. News & World Report as a Best Hospital for colon cancer surgery for 2017-18. The annual Best Hospitals rankings, now in their 28th year, are part of U.S. News’ patient portal, designed to help patients make informed decisions about where to receive care for life-threatening conditions or for common elective procedures. For the 2017-18 rankings, U.S. News evaluated more than 4,500 medical centers nationwide in 25 specialties, procedures and conditions. In the 16 specialty areas, 152 hospitals were ranked in at least one specialty. In rankings by state and metro area, U.S. News recognized hospitals as high performing across multiple areas of care.

Henrico CASA seeks volunteers for training as child advocates


Henrico County Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) will offer a training program beginning Saturday, Sept. 23 for volunteers who would work in the court system on behalf of abused or neglected children.

The free, 14-session training course will include classes at the Henrico CASA office in suite A of the Hungary Spring Office Park, 3001 Hungary Spring Road. A swearing-in ceremony will follow Wednesday, Oct. 25 at the Henrico Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court.

Brazilian firm to locate in Innsbrook


AUG. 11, 3:15 P.M. – CTA Plus, a Brazilian-based company focused on transport systems, will open its North American headquarters in Innsbrook, with a new American brand called Link2pump. The Greater Richmond Partnership made the announcement today.

The company plans to hire five employees within a year and invest as much as $350,000.

Henrico Police seek robbery suspect


Henrico Police are seeking the public's assistance in identifying a man wanted for robbery.

On Aug. 10 at about 8 p.m., police responded to the 7500 block of Staples Mill Road after reports that a victim met a person who was planning to buy an electronic device from the victim. During the encounter, the suspect grabbed the device and, during a struggle, threatened the victim.

McEachin’s Education Task Force to host education forum


U.S. Congressman A. Donald McEachin (Virginia - Fourth District) Aug. 12 will host the “Know Your Rights: Parent Power” education forum to bring education advocates and professionals together to help inform parents about their rights, resources and services available to them and their students.

The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle School, 1000 Mosby Street in Richmond.

Hinson considered seeking Brookland seat in special election


AUG. 8, 11:15 A.M. – Interim Brookland District Supervisor Harvey Hinson considered entering the November special election for the final two years of the term of late supervisor Dick Glover but recently decided against it, he told the Citizen Monday.

Following Glover's death in February, the other four board members appointed Hinson (a retired Henrico deputy county manager who spent nearly 47 years as a county employee) to fill the seat until a special election could be called.
