Milestones

Emily Mounce, Neal Moriconi, Akash Jain, Eric Clark and Robyn Abernathy of Richmond and Melissa Limbaugh of Glen Allen have gained membership to the Marching Virginians of Virginia Tech. To qualify for the marching band students must audition one week before the beginning of classes each fall.

Commonly known as The Spirit of Tech, Virginia Tech’s marching band is in its 37th year. Founded in 1974, The Marching Virginians have performed for hundreds of nationally televised football games and parades.

Michael C. Leopold, associate professor of chemistry at the University of Richmond, recently received a Henry Dreyfus Teacher Scholar-Award for 2010. The award provides Leopold with $60,000 to spend over five years in support of his research assisted by Richmond undergraduates. Fewer than 10 of the awards are made annually by the Camille & Henry Dreyfus Foundation Inc.

Leopold studies nanomaterials in the environment, work that is at the junction of materials science and bioanalytical chemistry. He is particularly interested in the interactions between synthetic nanomaterials and biomolecules.

The Home Building Association of Richmond recently appointed the following new officers: president – David Owen of Boone Homes; vice president (builder) – Ollin Toler of Gumenick Properties; vice president (associate) – Skip Eastman of iLevel by Weyerhaeuser; treasurer – David Fahy of Village Bank; at-large builder on executive committee – Sarah Kellam of Homeplaces; at-large builder on executive committee – Rob Lanphear of Ryan Homes; at-large associate on executive committee – Brandon Beswick of C&F Mortgage; past president representative – Eddie Goode of Colonial; executive committee – Homecrafters; immediate past president – Kevin McNulty of Lifestyle Builders & Developers.

New board members for the Home Building Association of Richmond are Kirk Aikey of Aikey Construction; Jeremy Harring of Harring Construction; Doug Jones, CPA of B2B CFO and Dave Smith of Thalhimer.

Virginia's Division of Capitol Police promoted four police officers, including two Henrico residents, at a ceremony earlier this week. Thomas Hickey was promoted to the position of lieutenant, special operations and Jesse Gilliam was promoted to the position of shift sergeant, daily shift.

Hickey has more than 29 years of law enforcement experience with DCP. His new duties consist of managing the day-to-day operations of Investigations, administrative oversight and coordination of the Critical Incident Team and the Crowd Response Teams, development of the Division’s operations plans for special events and intelligence.

Gilliam has more than 15 years of law enforcement experience.  His new duties involve supervising patrolmen assigned and daily operations of the day shift. He retired from the U.S. Navy as a helicopter aircrewman and undersea acoustic analyst.

Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell recently appointed Shelly Shuman-Johnson of Chesterfield to the State Council for Interstate Adult Offender Supervision. Shuman-Johnson is the director of the Henrico County Victim/Witness Assistance Program.

Holidays will delay some CVWMA collections


CVWMA curbside recycling collection and trash collections will have a one day delay in collections Dec. 25-26 and Jan. 1-2. There will be no collections on Dec. 25 or Jan. 1.

Curbside recycling collections Monday through Wednesday will be on regular schedule. Red Thursday and Red Friday curbside recyclers will have a one day delay in collection services Dec. 25-26. Blue Thursday and Blue Friday curbside recyclers will have one day delay in collection services Jan. 1-2. Containers should be placed at the curb by 7 a.m. on collection day. MADD to host candlelight vigil Dec. 2 at UR

Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) will host a candlelight vigil of remembrance and hope Tuesday, Dec. 2 at 7 p.m. at the University of Richmond, outside the Cannon Chapel. The public is invited to attend and join MADD to honor victims of impaired driving crashes, while helping to remind the community to be safe during the holidays. > Read more.

Several holiday performances take place this weekend in Henrico including “It’s a Wonderful Life” and Theatre IV on Tour’s “’Twas the Night Before Christmas” – both at The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen. One of the most unique holiday traditions in Henrico, the James River Parade of Lights, takes place tomorrow. The viewing spot in Henrico will be at Osborne Park in Varina. Another annual event in the east end is the Eastern Henrico Holiday Extravaganza, taking place this year at The Armour House & Gardens and the Dabbs House Museum. In the West End, the Glorious Christmas Nights’ production of “Under the Same Stars” at West End Assembly of God will conclude its run on Sunday.
