Clemson University student Andy Pham, of Glen Allen, recently traveled to a major Chicago trade show to demonstrate Clemson’s latest technology to track consumer behavior. Pham, a graduate student in packaging science, and 10 other students and five faculty members went to PACK EXPO International to show the interactive exhibit “The Packaging Test Track,” which aims to answer questions about how shoppers decide what to buy and how much packaging plays a part.
Sophomore Michael Lutzky recently was named to the dean’s honor roll for the fall 2012 trimester at the American Hebrew Academy in Greensboro, N.C. To be eligible for the dean’s honor roll, students must earn a minimum academic average of 90. Lutzky is the son of Paula and Ira Lutzky, of Richmond.
Marine Corps Pfc. Calvin L. Robinson, son of Barbara A. Robinson, of Richmond, and Robert L. Krushelnisky, son of Morena and Robert A. Krushelnisky, of Glen Allen, have earned the title of United States Marine after graduating from recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot in Parris Island, S.C. Robinson and Krushelnisky spent 13 weeks training on subjects including close-order drill, marksmanship with an M-16A4 rifle, physical fitness, martial arts, swimming, military history, customs and courtesies. One week prior to graduation, they endured The Crucible, a 54-hour final test of recruits' minds and bodies. Upon completion, recruits are presented the Marine Corps emblem and called Marines for the first time. Robinson is a 2012 graduate of Varina High School. Krushelnisky is a 1976 graduate of Kalani High School in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Thomas Beatty, of Glen Allen, recently was initiated into Phi Kappa Phi, a collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines. Beatty is pursuing a degree in English at Virginia Commonwealth University.
The grand opening of The Rink outdoor ice skating rink at West Broad Village will be held Saturday, Nov. 14, beginning at 11 a.m. with skating and family activities. At 4 p.m., grand opening festivities – featuring exhibitions of ice sculpting, ice skating and cheering, as well as fire pits, costumed characters, and food vendors – will begin. Skating costs are $8 for children and $10 for adults, with $4 skate rentals available. Parking is free. The Rink is located at 3939 Duckling Drive, Glen Allen. Looking for a Virginia-grown Christmas tree this year? You can find a list of all locations that offer trees in the 2015 Virginia Grown Christmas Tree Guide, published by the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) in cooperation with the Virginia Christmas Tree Growers Association. The guide is designed as a resource for finding choose-and-cut, fresh-cut and live Christmas trees across the state. Complimentary copies are available through tourist information centers, libraries and Virginia Cooperative Extension offices.
