Milestones


Amy Turner, daughter of Marcus and Diane Turner, of Glen Allen, has started the student teaching component of teacher certification at Davis & Elkins College in Elkins, W.V. Student teaching is the culminating experience in D&E's teacher education program. Teacher candidates work full-time in public school classrooms under the mentoring of a qualified co-operating teacher. By the end of two seven-week teaching placements, student teachers have gained valuable experience in planning, teaching and managing a classroom. Turner is a physical education major.

Joshua Hood, son of Capt. and Mrs. Jeffrey Hood, of Glen Allen, recently was named to the dean’s list with distinction for the fall 2012 semester at Grove City College in Grove City, Pa. To be eligible for the dean’s list with distinction, students must earn a grade point average between 3.6 and 3.84.

Daniel Franklin, of Glen Allen, recently was named to the dean’s list for the fall 2012 semester at Patrick Henry Community College in Martinsville, Va. To be eligible for the dean’s list, students must earn a grade point average of 3.2 or higher.

To be eligible for the dean’s list, students must earn a 3.6 or higher quality point average.

Anya Olga-Frances Aboud, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Aboud, and Caroline Grace Blank, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. John Emmett Blank, recently were named to the dean’s list for the fall 2012 semester at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa. To be eligible for the dean’s list, students must earn a grade point average of 3.7 or above. Aboud and Blank are graduates of the Collegiate School.

To be eligible for the dean’s list, students must earn a minimum grade point average of 3.5.

Elizabeth Levy, of Glen Allen, recently was named to the dean’s list for the fall 2012 semester at the College at Brockport, State University of New York. To be eligible for the dean’s list, students must earn a grade point average between 3.4 and 3.69.

Ashley Nichole Coffman, of Glen Allen, graduated from Eastern Kentucky University in December 2012. Coffman received a bachelor of science degree in elementary education teaching.

Abby Patterson, daughter of Scot and Adena Patterson, of Richmond, recently was named to the dean’s list for the fall 2012 term at Centre College in Danville, Ky. To be eligible for the dean’s list, students must earn a minimum 3.6 grade point average. Patterson is a graduate of Henrico High School.

Ryan Donchez, son of Joseph and Veronica Donchez, and Amy Turner, daughter of Marcus and Diane Turner, of Glen Allen, recently were named to the dean’s list for the fall 2012 semester at Davis & Elkins College in Elkins, W.V. Marine Corps Pfc. Takara R. Simpson, daughter of James and Rachael Simpson, of Richmond, recently graduated from the Marine Aviation Supply Specialist Course with Marine Aviation Training Support Squadron One, Marine Aviation Support Training Support Group 21, Meridian, Miss. Students in this course learn to perform the functions necessary to provide logistical support to aviation activities. They perform tasks dealing with aviation supply support, including financial management, inventory management, material management, personnel staffing and requisitioning procedures. In addition, graduates from the course leave with an understanding of provisioning and requirements determination, material handling procedures, and fiscal accounting and purchasing procedures in accordance with Federal Acquisitioning Regulations.

Architect of World Trade Center Memorial to speak in Henrico


Michael Arad, the architect of the World Trade Center Memorial, will be the keynote speaker for The 2016 Adolf-Adams JCC Forum on Sat., Jan. 30, 2016 at 7:30 p.m., at the Carole and Marcus Weinstein Jewish Community Center in Henrico.

Arad’s “Reflecting Absence” architectural design was selected from more than 5,000 competitive entries as the template for the Memorial’s construction in New York City. During the forum, Arad will discuss the significance and symbolism of the design, as well as his inspiration. The event, which is a highlight of the Weinstein JCC’s Patron of the Arts series, is open to the public > Read more.

Environmental Film Festival planned for February


The Sixth Annual RVA Environmental Film Festival (RVA EFF) will be held Feb. 1-7, 2016 at various locations, including in Henrico County.

A partnership of The Enrichmond Foundation, Capital Region Land Conservancy, Chesapeake Climate Action Network, and Falls of the James Group - Sierra Club, the festival will feature a number of insightful films designed to raise awareness of environmental issues relative to all residents of the planet and Richmond citizens in particular.

A detailed schedule will be released at a time closer to the festival, but the popular children's portion has been set for Saturday, Feb. 6, at the Byrd Theatre in Carytown. > Read more.
