Milestones


Marine Corps Pfc. Cory R. Holsinger, son of Pamm and Joseph Holsinger, of Sandston, has earned the title of United States Marine after graduating from recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot in Parris Island, S.C. Holsinger spent 13 weeks training on subjects including close-order drill, marksmanship with an M-16A4 rifle, physical fitness, martial arts, swimming, military history, customs and courtesies. One week prior to graduation, he endured The Crucible, a 54-hour final test of recruits' minds and bodies. Upon completion, recruits are presented the Marine Corps emblem and called Marines for the first time. Holsinger is a 2009 graduate of Highland Springs High School.

Hanna Brooks, of Henrico, a sophomore majoring in geosciences in the College of Science at Virginia Tech, is among 28 students who will spend their 2013 spring semester traveling across the globe as part of the university’s Presidential Global Scholars program. The Presidential Global Scholars program, which began Jan. 19 and will run through May 8, provides students in the University Honors Program with a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in several global cultures. Though stationed in Riva San Vitale, Switzerland, participants will travel to locations across Europe, as well as a trip to Ghana in Africa. Distinguished Virginia Tech faculty will accompany the students.

Jordan Harris
Jordan Alexandra Harris, an eighth grade honor student at Byrd Middle School, has been appointed a Page for the Virginia House of Delegates Class of 2013. Harris is a primary violinist in the Byrd Orchestra and has served as a library aide for two years. She is a member of the children’s choir City Singers and St. Paul’s Baptist Church, where she was a former member of Ayinde-2, a liturgical dance ensemble. Harris will serve as a Page until the General Assembly adjourns Feb. 23.

Cari Morgan Tretina, of Glen Allen, recently was named to the dean’s list and the president’s list for the fall 2012 semester at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond, Ky. To be eligible for the dean’s list, students must earn a 3.5 grade point average; students must earn a 4.0 GPA to be eligible for the president’s list. Tretina is a senior public relations major.

County plans Fourth of July event


Henrico County Recreation and Parks will present “Red, White, and Lights” at Meadow Farm Museum/Crump Park July 4.

Henrico County has hosted a Fourth of July celebration annually since 1981, but this year’s event will offer a later start time and expanded hours and be highlighted by new entertainment.

The free event will begin at 4:30 p.m. and will feature the Richmond Symphony, a laser-light show, patriotic performances, and family activities. > Read more.

Tuckahoe YMCA to host Refugee Community Resource Fair


The Tuckahoe Family YMCA and ReEstablish Richmond will host the third-annual Refugee Community Resource Fair Saturday, June 18, from 10 a.m. to noon at the YMCA, 9211 Patterson Avenue in Henrico. The event is designed to provide refugees in the region information about jobs, local businesses, housing, health care, education and more.

As part of its strategic plan, the YMCA of Greater Richmond works to identify, address and eliminate economic, geographic and cultural barriers. > Read more.

Muse Paintbar opens at Willow Lawn


Muse Paintbar, which combines painting instruction with a wine bar and restaurant, opened June 23 at The Shops at Willow Lawn in Henrico. The location is the company's 17th nationwide.

Guests can learn from local artists while sampling a wide selection of wine, beer and tapas. The facility held a soft-launch last weekend, allowing patrons a sneak peek at the studio’s artistic offerings.
