Kenzie Ferguson, of Glen Allen, is among the 114 Marymount University undergraduate students who have been selected as national outstanding campus leaders and are included in the 2013 edition of “Who's Who among Students in American Universities and Colleges.” Students are selected based on their academic achievement, service to the community, leadership in extracurricular activities and potential for continued success. Ferguson is majoring in fashion merchandising.

Philip Rutledge, of Richmond, recently was named to the dean’s list for the fall 2012 semester at Anderson University in Anderson, S.C. To be eligible for the dean’s list, students must maintain a 3.5 or higher grade point average.

Gov. Bob McDonnell recently appointed the following local residents to Virginia boards and commissions: Board of Medicine – Dr. Siobhan S. Dunnavant, of Henrico, physician with OB-GYN Associates; and University of Virginia Board of Visitors – William H. Goodwin, Jr., of Richmond.

Sophomore John Harrison Vance, of Henrico, recently was named to the dean’s list for the fall 2012 semester at Presbyterian College in Clinton, S.C. To be eligible for the dean’s list, students must maintain a 3.5 or higher grade point average.

Marine Corps Pfc. Justin T. Beck, son of Andrea R. and Douglas M. Beck, of Sandston, has earned the title of United States Marine after graduating from recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot in Parris Island, S.C. Beck spent 13 weeks training on subjects including close-order drill, marksmanship with an M-16A4 rifle, physical fitness, martial arts, swimming, military history, customs and courtesies. One week prior to graduation, he endured The Crucible, a 54-hour final test of recruits' minds and bodies. Upon completion, recruits are presented the Marine Corps emblem and called Marines for the first time. Beck is a 2009 graduate of Varina High School.

James Jewell, of Henrico, recently was named to the dean's list for the fall 2012 semester at Jacksonville State University in Alabama. To be eligible for the dean’s list, students must earn a grade point average between 3.5 and 3.99.

Alexander N. Beck, of Glen Allen, recently was named to the president’s list for the fall 2012 semester at Coastal Carolina University in Conway, S.C. To be eligible for the president’s list, students must earn a 4.0 grade point average. Beck is majoring in history.

Haley C. Chapel, of Glen Allen, recently was named to the dean’s list for the fall 2012 semester at Coastal Carolina University in Conway, S.C. To be eligible for the dean’s list, freshmen must earn a 3.25 grade point average and upperclassmen must earn a 3.5 GPA. Chapel is majoring in theatre arts.

Timothy West, of Glen Allen, recently was named to the dean’s list for the fall 2012 semester at the University of Delaware in Newark, Del. To be eligible for the dean’s list, students must earn a grade point average of 3.3 or higher.

Chelsea Tyler, of Henrico, is a member of the 2012-13 Randolph College women’s basketball team. Tyler, a 5'5 sophomore guard, has played 12 games this season. She leads the team with 26 steals, averages 6.1 points, and is shooting 34.6 percent outside of the arc. The WildCats are currently 3-9 overall, and 1-4 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.

Local couple wins wedding at Lewis Ginter


Richmonders Jim Morgan and Dan Stackhouse were married at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden in Lakeside Mar. 7 month after winning the Say I Do! With OutRVA wedding contest in February. The contest was open to LGBT couples in recognition of Virginia’s marriage equality law, which took effect last fall. The wedding included a package valued at $25,000.

Morgan and Stackhouse, who became engaged last fall on the day marriage equality became the law in Virginia, have been together for 16 years. They were selected from among 40 couples who registered for the contest. The winners were announced at the Say I Do! Dessert Soiree at the Renaissance in Richmond in February. > Read more.

Fourth-annual Healy Gala planned


The Fourth Annual Healy Gala will be held Saturday, Apr. 11, at The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.

The event was created to honor Michael Healy, a local businessman and community leader who died suddenly in June 2011, and to endow the Mike Healy Scholarship (through the Glen Allen Ruritan Club), which benefits students of Glen Allen High School.

Healy served as the chairman of Glen Allen Day for several years and helped raise thousands of dollars for local charities and organizations. > Read more.

Ruritan Club holding Brunswick stew sale


The Richmond Battlefield Ruritan Club is holding a Brunswick stew sale, with orders accepted through March 13 and pick-up available March 14. The cost is $8 per quart.

Pick-up will be at noon, March 14, at the Richmond Heights Civic Center, 7440 Wilton Road in Varina.

One beauty of a charmer

Disney’s no-frills, live-action ‘Cinderella’ delights

Cinderella is the latest from Disney’s new moviemaking battle plan: producing live-action adaptations of all their older classics. Which is a plan that’s had questionable results in the past.

Alice in Wonderland bloated with more Tim Burton goth-pop than the inside of a Hot Topic. Maleficent was a step in the right direction, but the movie couldn’t decide if Maleficent should be a hero or a villain (even if she should obviously be a villain) and muddled itself into mediocrity.

Cinderella is much better. Primarily, because it’s just Cinderella. No radical rebooting. No Tim Burton dreck. It’s the 1950 Disney masterpiece, transposed into live action and left almost entirely untouched. > Read more.

‘An Evening of Country’ scheduled April 9-10


The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen’s 2nd Stage series will present “An Evening of Country” with The Honky Tonk Experience, April 9-10 at 7 p.m. in the center’s Cardinal Ballroom.

Formed in the spring of 2003, The Honky Tonk Experience performs country classics and current country music, from Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings to Dwight Yoakam and Dale Watson. The “Experience” is composed of five local musicians – Brad Spivey, Mike Lucas, Mark Watts, Clark Ball and Ryland Tinnell. The group has shared the stage with several national acts, including Travis Tritt, BR5-49, Dale Watson, Webb Wilder and Junior Brown. > Read more.
