Henrico County Extension Agents Karen Carter and Lisa Sanderson recently were part of a team of agents in Virginia that earned a second place award in the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services' 2011 Pesticide Safety Education Program. The two Henrico agents and four others earned the award for their efforts to design a formal training program to prepare applicators to pass the registered technician, core, category and private applicator exams for certification.


The following members have been re-elected to the Randolph-Macon College Board of Directors of the Society of Alumni: Rev. David F. Jarvis II, of Glen Allen, and Kathryn Viall Stottlemyer, of Richmond. The Board is comprised of 37 members, from class years spanning seven decades, who are elected for staggered three-year terms. The members are expected to serve on a standing committee; be active ambassadors for student recruitment efforts; actively support initiatives associated with the Board's strategic priorities; and support the Randolph-Macon Fund. Jarvis, Class of ’59, is a retired United Methodist clergy. Stottlemyer, Class of ’99, is vice president of operations of Tweed gifts and home accents.


Jamel Davis, of Richmond, recently graduated from Coastal Carolina University in Conway, S.C. He received a bachelor of arts degree in communication.


Richard Michael Pantele, a senior at Hampden-Sydney College, has been recognized as an outstanding campus leader in the 2013 edition of “Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.” A Madison Scholar, Pantele is president of the social fraternity Chi Phi, vice president of the Orthodox Christian Fellowship and secretary of the honorary society Pi Sigma Alpha (political science). He also serves as a member of the Student Court, as Senior Class Campaign chairman and as a resident advisor. A government major, Pantele is a graduate of Godwin High School.


VMI 1st Class Cadet Nick Potter, of Henrico, is currently conducting graduate-level work in physics – while still an undergraduate. He is experimenting with Janus particles, microscopic polystyrene spheres coated on one side with metal to give them unique attributes. Practical applications of his research include thin-film optical coatings. The Godwin High School graduate will complete his studies at VMI this spring with a major in physics.


John Eugene Dunlea, of Glen Allen, recently graduated from Bethel University in McKenzie, Tenn. He was awarded a master of business administration degree from the College of Graduate Studies.


The following students from Henrico recently were named to the dean’s list for the fall 2012 semester at Furman University in Greenville, S.C.: Kelsey Bing, daughter of Mr. and Ms. John Bing; Alexandra Buff, daughter of Mr. Scott Buff and Mrs. Patricia Buff; Meredith Donahue, daughter of Mr. Thomas Donahue and Mary Sue Donahue; and Ann Snyder, daughter of Candice and David Snyder. To be eligible for the dean’s list, students must earn a grade point average of 3.4 or higher.

Varina Ruritans honor police, fire officials and community members

The Varina Ruritan Club celebrated its 80th anniversary with a banquet Nov. 10, during which it presented several annual awards, including Policeman of the Year – to Henrico Officer Aaron M. Lancaster (top) – and Firefighter of the Year – to Julian T. Lipscomb (second from top).

The club also received a plaque from the Henrico Division of Fire (third from top) expressing the division's appreciation for the club and its support of fire prevention programs. > Read more.

The Rink to open at WBV Nov. 14

The grand opening of The Rink outdoor ice skating rink at West Broad Village will be held Saturday, Nov. 14, beginning at 11 a.m. with skating and family activities. At 4 p.m., grand opening festivities – featuring exhibitions of ice sculpting, ice skating and cheering, as well as fire pits, costumed characters, and food vendors – will begin. Skating costs are $8 for children and $10 for adults, with $4 skate rentals available. Parking is free. The Rink is located at 3939 Duckling Drive, Glen Allen.
