Freeman HS team places third nationally in Constitutional competition

A team of Douglas S. Freeman High School students took third place in the national finals of the "We The People" competition. The annual contest pits 56 teams – each state’s champions and a few wild-card participants – in a test of in-depth knowledge of the US Constitution. Douglas Freeman’s team was chosen as a wild-card participant and the school’s third place finish was the best ever for an at-large choice in the competition’s 28-year history.

“Historically in the program, there are a handful of schools around the country that are always their state champions and always there, so it’s pretty hard to break into the top ten,” said team coach Robert Peck, head of the Center for Leadership, Government and Global Economics at Douglas Freeman. “It was a big deal for us that we made the top ten as a wild-card team.

Student’s art earns national honors

Douglas Freeman High School tenth-grader Anna Laughter (pictured) recently learned that a drawing she completed last year will be placed on display at the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art in Virginia Beach Nov. 16 through Dec. 30.

The recognition, part of The Alliance for Young Artists and Writers’ “Art. Write. Now. Tour 12-13,” is the latest for Laughter’s work, which earlier had earned three other honors.

2 schools honored by Holocaust Museum

Freeman and Henrico High Schools were recognized recently by the Virginia Holocaust Museum for their efforts to teach students about the Holocaust and genocide.

The museum’s director of education, Rena Berlin presented the “NOW” award to both schools for going above and beyond in giving students a closer look at the Holocaust.
