Celebration planned for 46-year Lakeside ES teacher

Lakeside Elementary School will host a celebration June 9 for Carole Timberlake, a first-grade teacher at the school for the past 46 years, who is retiring this year.

The event will be held in the school's auditorium, beginning at 6:30 p.m., followed by a reception. Members of the public – including Timberlake's former students – are invited to attend. To RSVP, call (804) 261-5050 or register online at http://tinyurl.com/Timberlake46.

Maybeury students ‘plant it!’

Henrico County third-graders, including the three students from Maybeury Elementary School pictured, will embark on an educational adventure this spring with Dominion’s Project Plant It! program. Teachers received a kit of SOL-based lesson plans and other instructional materials. (Pictured, left to right, are Renee Jervey, Matthew Mays, teacher Meredith Traynham and Tanaja Monroe.)

Entitled to success

Lakeside E.S. Principal Herb Monroe sees students to their buses.

Herb Monroe moves through the halls of Lakeside Elementary School with a purposeful gait and a soft but direct demeanor.

Around every corner is a student waiting for a hug or a high-five or a teacher with a piece of information to impart. He makes a pit stop to address fourth-graders in the cafeteria, checks in with a teacher about a student who needs extra help, then flashes a smile to a volunteer before poking his head into a boys’ restroom to make sure order is in place.

First Lady, Students ‘Get Active, Get Fit’

Virginia First Lady Maureen McDonnell visited Henrico’s Trevvett Elementary School Nov. 22 to champion the “Get Active. Get Fit” challenge, a youth and family-fitness program sponsored by Radio Disney and Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield that encourages active lifestyles in both children and adults.

The program included a school challenge from Oct. 4 through Nov. 28 designed to encourage children to exercise for at least 15 minutes per day for 40 out of 55 days. Prizes and reward parties will be awarded to schools that have the highest participation.

When Legos Take Over

Colonial Trail Elementary's "Bionicle Brains" team.
Plastic robots took over the Deep Run High School gymnasium Nov. 13, as 24 teams of local students competed in the annual FIRST Lego League (FLL) Robotics Tournament at the school. The teams sent their Lego robots into competition against others in the event hosted by the Deep Run Blue Cheese Robotics Team 1086, which annually competes in the high school FIRST Robotics Competition and FIRST Tech Challenge.

Lakeside ES Named Title 1 Distinguished School

The Virginia Department of Education has recognized Lakeside Elementary School as a National Title 1 Distinguished School. Lakeside Elementary School was selected by a peer review panel to represent Virginia in the category of "Closing the Achievement Gap Among Student Groups" for two or more consecutive years.
