Contractor unlikely to face financial penalty for accident
UPDATE: NOV. 21, 9:55 A.M. – The contractor whose employee accidentally destroyed the power supply to most of Henrico High School Tuesday – causing the school to be closed for more than three days this week – is unlikely to face financial penalties from the school system as the result of the incident.
School officials are focused on efforts to restore power to the school, HCPS spokesman Andy Jenks told the Citizen.
"But at a later date, we'll get together with the contractor and discuss responsibility," Jenks wrote in an email.
Dylan Gordon, a senior at Glen Allen H.S., took the wheel of a high-tech simulator May 21 as the Arrive Alive Tour from UNITE visited GAHS to raise awareness among teens of the dangers of distracted and drunken driving. Storn Olson of UNITE looked on from the window as Gordon, using a video simulator, moved from focused "driving" to driving while texting and while impaired.
Glen Allen High School students will receive a day with the UNITE International Texting Simulator on May 21, after a group of students from the school won the 2013 “Arrive Alive PSA Contest,” sponsored by Youth of Virginia Speak Out About Traffic Safety (YOVASO), UNITE International, and the Virginia State Police Association (VSPA).
Glen Allen’s public service announcement focused on the dangers of texting while driving and posed the question, “Is it worth it?”
On May 5, 1963, at 3 p.m., officials of Varina High School dedicated their brand new school on Messer Road.

A student at JR Tucker High School has organized a school supply and book drive to assist the schools in West, Texas, that were affected by last week's fertilizer plant explosion there. The blast damaged or destroyed three of the town's four schools and materials, which cannot be used.
Tucker student Shane Powers is encouraging members of the public to contribute school supplies and gently used, or new, books to the effort by dropping them off at the front office at Tucker.
Supporters of the state champion Henrico High School Warriors boys' basketball team are raising money to purchase championship rings for the team, which defeated Northside rival John Marshall to win the title earlier this month.
The school and school system do not budget for such expenses, so the purchase of rings requires other funding.
UPDATE: FEB. 14, 4:46 PM – The Henrico County School Board today voted 4-1 to adopt stricter academic standards for high school athletes, requiring that they maintain 2.0 grade point averages in order to play school-sanctioned sports beginning in the 2013-14 school year.
Three Chopt District representative Diana Winston voted against the item on a technicality, arguing that the standards should have been adopted as new School Board policy rather than merely as updated school system regulations. But she said she strongly supported the tougher standards.
While all members of the Henrico High School International Baccalaureate (IB) class of 2012 were awarded the Virginia Advanced Studies Diploma, the county's school system recently received notification that 93 percent of the IB Diploma candidates from that class were awarded the IB Diploma, surpassing the world average of 78.1 percent.
