Col. Donald B. Kaiserman, of Henrico, has been elected as chairman of the Virginia Joint Leadership Council (JLC). The JLC is recognized as the leading Veterans Council advocating for the military community in the Commonwealth and “Speaks with a Single Voice” for the more than 820,000 veterans living in Virginia. Kaiserman had previously served as the JLC legislative chair and as vice chair. Kaiserman is also president of The Council of 18 Chapters of the Military Officers Association of America, serves on the Virginia Board of Veterans Service (being vetted by Gov. McDonnell), the Virginia War Memorial Board of Directors and the Fort Lee Retiree Council.

Christian Snowden, of Richmond, recently was named to the Dean’s List for the spring 2011 semester at Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Ga. To be eligible for the Dean’s List, students must achieve a grade point average of 3.5 or above. Snowden is seeking a bachelor of fine arts degree in architecture.

Phil Harvatine, Marcia Swenck and Ratha Ramasamy, members of Toastmasters International Power Lunch Expressions Club No. 1024785, recently earned communication and leadership awards within the last educational program year. Harvatine and Swenck qualified as Competent Communicators; Swenck also achieved Competent Leader recognition. Ramasamy earned the Advanced Communicator Bronze Award. The club also recently achieved Select Distinguished Club status for Toastmasters International calendar year ending June 30. This is the second highest honor bestowed to clubs by the national office and is the highest achievement by Power Lunch Expressions since its charter in April 2007. Laura Browder, University of Richmond professor of American Studies and English, was recently nominated for a Library of Virginia People’s Choice Award for her nonfiction book, “When Janey Comes Marching Home.” Browder’s book tells the story of women and modern war, using oral histories compiled from women in each branch of the U.S. military who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. A team from the Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School recently placed first in the nation in the “We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution” national finals. Team members study a broad range of topics related to American government and constitutionalism and prepare for simulated congressional hearings, during which judges ask questions and score units based on knowledge and articulation.
