Col. Donald B. Kaiserman, of Henrico, has been elected as chairman of the Virginia Joint Leadership Council (JLC). The JLC is recognized as the leading Veterans Council advocating for the military community in the Commonwealth and “Speaks with a Single Voice” for the more than 820,000 veterans living in Virginia. Kaiserman had previously served as the JLC legislative chair and as vice chair. Kaiserman is also president of The Council of 18 Chapters of the Military Officers Association of America, serves on the Virginia Board of Veterans Service (being vetted by Gov. McDonnell), the Virginia War Memorial Board of Directors and the Fort Lee Retiree Council.

Alexander N. Beck, of Glen Allen, recently was named to the President’s List for the fall 2011 semester at Coastal Carolina University in Conway, S.C. To be eligible for the President’s List, students must earn a 4.0 grade point average. The following students were also named to the Dean’s List for the fall 2011 semester: Meghan M. Bandura, of Glen Allen; Mallory L. Moore and Jessica F. Smith, of Richmond; and Garrett I. Walker, of Henrico. To be eligible for the Dean’s List, students must earn a 3.5 grade point average.

Anne Marie Morgan, an adjunct professor of political science in the University of Richmond’s School of Professional and Continuing Studies, recently co-edited a textbook, “Governing Virginia,” which describes Virginia’s politics and government through the centuries. The textbook traces Virginia’s contributions to governing principles in the United States and the world. Chapters discuss Virginia’s political transformation and how the state’s government works today. The book’s contributors include five former governors, current and former legislators and other state leaders. Morgan is a broadcast journalist and is the State Capitol bureau chief for Virginia Public Radio. She also served as a member and chair of the State Board for Community Colleges, which oversees 23 Virginia community colleges on 40 campuses.

Brianna Gabrielle Dillard and Stephanie Lynn Oliver, of Glen Allen, recently were named to the Dean’s List for the fall 2011 semester at Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs, N.C. Eligible students must maintain a 3.7 or higher grade point average. Dillard is majoring in psychology and Oliver is majoring in American Sign Language.

Marine Corps Pvt. Kevin M. McDonough, of Glen Allen, recently completed 12 weeks of basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot in Parris Island, S.C. McDonough and fellow recruits endured rigorous physical training as well as numerous hours in classroom and field assignments, which included learning first aid, uniform regulations, combat water survival, marksmanship, hand-to-hand combat and assorted weapons training. McDonough ended the training phase with The Crucible, a 54-hour team evolution culminating in an emotional ceremony in which recruits are presented the Marine Corps Emblem and addressed as “Marines” for the first time.

Paris McCray, of Richmond, recently completed the Freedom Alliance Military Leadership Academy, a leadership program based on the curriculum of the U.S. military. In its tenth year, the two-week academy couples an intense leadership training environment with challenging and educational experiences like a tour of the Aviation Logistics School and simulators at Ft. Eustis, a Leadership Reaction Course, and land navigation and fire team tactics. The cadets also visit historical sites, such as the monuments in Washington, D.C., to maximize lessons on selfless service and celebrating America’s achievements. Lindsay Crittenden and Christopher Alexander, juniors at Washington and Lee University, recently had their work included in an art exhibition titled Drawing Italy 2011, which was recently on display at the university’s Lenfest Center.

The Richmond Tennis Association (RTA) recently announced the winners of its Junior Player Awards. Those recognized were Liam Sullivan, a junior at Trinity High School; Connor Brewer, a junior at Collegiate School; Harris Blair, a student at St. Christopher’s School; Jacqueline Dillon, a sophomore at Godwin High School; Justin Cerny, a sophomore at Trinity High School; and Allie Straus, a student at Collegiate School. RTA is one of the oldest and most successful community tennis organizations in the United States. The Junior Player Awards are presented annually. Malcolm Hill, associate professor of biology, Vincent Wei-cheng Wang, professor of political science, and Lisa Gentile, associate professor of chemistry, recently were appointed associate deans in the School of Arts and Sciences at the University of Richmond. The appointments are effective January 2012.
