Col. Donald B. Kaiserman, of Henrico, has been elected as chairman of the Virginia Joint Leadership Council (JLC). The JLC is recognized as the leading Veterans Council advocating for the military community in the Commonwealth and “Speaks with a Single Voice” for the more than 820,000 veterans living in Virginia. Kaiserman had previously served as the JLC legislative chair and as vice chair. Kaiserman is also president of The Council of 18 Chapters of the Military Officers Association of America, serves on the Virginia Board of Veterans Service (being vetted by Gov. McDonnell), the Virginia War Memorial Board of Directors and the Fort Lee Retiree Council.

Sha’Teria Johnson, of Highland Springs, recently was named to the honor’s list for the spring 2012 semester at Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, Va. To be eligible for the honor’s list, students must earn a grade point average of 3.75 or higher. The following students were named to the dean’s list at MBC: Amanda Harrison, Yvonne Knight and Charnelle Smith, of Richmond; and Siobhan Beza, of Glen Allen. To be eligible for the dean’s list, students must earn a grade point average of 3.5 to 3.74.

Unity Bowling, International Baccalaureate student at Fairfield Middle School and Miss Peninsula's Outstanding Teen 2012, has been named a regional winner in the Kohl's Cares Scholarship program. Bowling was awarded a $1,000 scholarship and is now eligible for one of the national level awards and an additional $9,000 scholarship. An advocate for literacy, she has worked with local elementary schools and head start/preschool programs, including the Henrico County Preschool Program, and she reads at the Children’s Museum of Richmond regularly. Bowling also collected and distributed more than 3,000 books to local organizations. Some English/Spanish books were also sent to the Dominican Republic to help create a library.

Henrico Police Athletic League’s Youth Leadership Council recently held elections and the following officers were elected: Kennedy Goldsborough, president; Malik Holmes, vice president; Jazmine Wilder, treasurer; Aysia Lee, secretary; and Andrew Johnson, Sgt. at arms. Past President Aubrey Temple will attend Duke University in the fall. Temple is a past Henrico PAL Youth of the Year award winner and the current National PAL 2011 Male Youth of the Year award winner. He is currently working the Henrico PAL Summer Camp as a youth counselor. YLC Coordinator and Henrico PAL Board Member Victor Williams manages the YLC.

The law firm of Allen, Allen, Allen & Allen has announced 50 winners of its 2012 Hometown Heroes award, including the following local residents: Jim Baber, Willard Douglas, Ken & Gail Henshaw, Andy Inge, Anne McDonnell, Marianne Rollings and Russ Warnick, of Richmond; Jonathan Cherry and Alan Tuck, of Sandston; and Kenton Scearce, of Glen Allen. Nominations for the Hometown Heroes award were accepted April 16 to May 25. Each hero selected has a unique and inspiring story of giving in some capacity, either on a large scale or through small everyday acts of kindness. Virginia Credit Union recently awarded $2,500 college scholarships to five students from Henrico County: Melissa Gostel, a senior at the University of Mary Washington; Brittany Keup, a 2012 graduate of Deep Run High School; Austin Link, a 2012 graduate of Freeman High School; Laura O’Brien, a sophomore at Wellesley College; and Carlyn Pearce, a 2012 graduate of Deep Run High School. The scholarships were awarded on the basis of scholastic achievement, community service, extracurricular activities, an essay and work to help defray the cost of education. VACU awarded $62,500 in scholarships to 25 student members in 2012.

Renick, of Glen Allen; Thomas William Massey, Jr., Richard Michael Pantele and William Izard Valentine, of Richmond. To be eligible for the dean’s list, students must achieve a grade point average of 3.3 or higher.

Brianna Dillard, of Glen Allen, recently graduated magna cum laude from Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs, N.C. She received a bachelor of science degree in psychology and sociology. Dillard was also named to the dean’s list for the spring 2012 semester, as well as Erwin Orlando Johnson, of Henrico. To be eligible for the dean’s list, students must maintain a grade point average of 3.7 or higher.

J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College President Dr. Gary L. Rhodes recently received the Ukrop Community Vision Service Award at the Leadership Metro Richmond Annual Spring Luncheon. Rhodes (LMR Class of 2004) received the award in recognition of demonstrating purposeful vision, genuine concern and respect for others and creating solutions for positive change within the Richmond region. Rhodes is board chair of SMART Beginnings and serves on seven other boards including Capital Region Collaborative.
