Lakeside Youth Baseball facility damaged by Friday’s flood

JUNE 19, 3:21 P.M. – The Lakeside Youth Baseball organization and facility has suffered hits from powerful storms before, and now it has happened again.

A June 16 storm caused localized flooding in Lakeside, and it was enough to damage LYB fields, concessions and equipment – days before two scheduled all-star tournaments it was set to host.

The timing was particularly unfortunate, said LYB Secretary Connie Fredericksen, because the regular season has just finished and all of the equipment that managers carry was at the field in the equipment room during the storm.

Canines of Henrico County soon will have a new place to roam.

Henrico County's first public dog park is scheduled to open in Varina's Dorey Park later this year.

The dog park will be located on about one acre of land near the pond at the park, on the opposite side of a gravel parking lot. Construction is expected to begin this month, with completion anticipated by late September, according to Al Azzarone, parks planning supervisor for the Henrico Division of Recreation and Parks.

RIR staffers assist with Operation Paintbrush

Members of the Richmond International Raceway staff assisted the Operation Paintbrush program in Henrico County this week by fixing up a local resident’s home through much-needed repairs. Staff members helped to scrape, paint, repair railings and gutters and give the landscaping a facelift.

“We recognize our responsibility of giving back to our neighbors in Henrico County,” said Richmond International Raceway president Dennis Bickmeier. “In the short amount of time I’ve been here, I realize what a great community this is in which to live, work and play. The Richmond International Raceway team is committed to our volunteer efforts, and Henrico County’s Operation Paintbrush is a great opportunity to continue that initiative.”

Sandston Youth Association receives new equipment

On June 20, the Sandston Youth Association and the Sandston Babe Ruth Association officially dedicated brand new equipment for their youth baseball facilities. Among the new pieces of equipment are a batting cage, three dozen new baseballs and a multi-speed pitching machine.

Donations to pay for the equipment were made by several sponsors, including the Sandston Memorial Recreation Center, the Sandston Masonic Lodge #216 and the Sandston branch of the C&F Bank. In total, $2,853 in donations were made to the Batting Cage and Equipment Fund Drive founded by Timothy Evans, a local citizen and past chairman of the Sandston Memorial Day Parade in 2009 and 2010.
