The Christmas spirit was alive in Varina Dec. 13, as the Varina Toy Parade rolled along Osborne Turnpike (featuring Henrico Christmas Mother Becky Goshorn, above) to the Osborne Boat Landing, where hundreds of spectators then gathered to watch the James River Boat Parade of Lights.

Raccoon tests postive for rabies

A juvenile raccoon found dead in Glen Allen this weekend has tested positive for rabies.

The dead animal was found in the 11000 block of Winfrey Road, just north of the intersection of Greenwood and Woodman roads north of I-295, inside a pen that housed two dogs. Contact between the raccoon and dogs was likely, according to Henrico police. The raccoon was taken to a state lab, which confirmed today that it tested positive for rabies.

Lakeside Farmers’ Market voted No. 1 in Va.

The Lakeside Farmers’ Market was voted the No. 1 farmers’ market in Virginia by patrons who participated in a national contest during the past several months.

The America Farmland Trust’s “America’s Favorite Farmers’ Market Contest” sought feedback and votes from readers nationwide for their favorite markets from among the 7,000-plus in the nation.

Lakeside Farmers’ Market earned 1,393 votes, placing it first among the more than 100 markets in Virginia and third nationally in the “Small Markets” category for markets with 16 to 30 vendors.

Innsbrook 5K Run/Walk

Hundreds of competitors of all ages took part in the Innsbrook 5K Run/Walk Sept. 10.

Movin’ & Groovin’ 5K Run/Walk planned Aug. 27 at Dorey Park

The eighth annual Movin and Groovin Event for pancreatic cancer research will take place at Dorey Park in Varina this Saturday, Aug. 27. The event, presented by Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, will feature a 5K run, a two-mile walk and a kids' fun run through the park.

Entertainment will be provided by DJ Luke Gibson, along with live music by Haze and the Transients, juggling by Jonathan Austin, PT Moonwalks and balloon fun with Miss Sheri the Clown.

PAL-ing around

Members of the Henrico Police Athletic League (PAL) joined together to perform community service projects in Henrico communities late last month.

The PAL Summer Camp and Youth Leadership Council sent 250 youths between the ages of six to 18 years old out to clean up apartment complexes July 25.

Indoor shooting range coming to Henrico

An indoor shooting range billed as the largest such facility in the nation is coming to Henrico County.

Colonial Shooting Academy is expected to open in February at 6020 West Broad Street near Willow Lawn, in the former Colony House Furniture building. The facility will be open seven days a week and house 39 shooting stations for use by members or the general public, as well as 11 stations for law enforcement training and a "shoot house," in which officers can practice various scenarios.

County’s first dog park being planned at Dorey Park

Canines of Henrico County soon will have a new place to roam.

Henrico County's first public dog park is scheduled to open in Varina's Dorey Park later this year.

The dog park will be located on about one acre of land near the pond at the park, on the opposite side of a gravel parking lot. Construction is expected to begin this month, with completion anticipated by late September, according to Al Azzarone, parks planning supervisor for the Henrico Division of Recreation and Parks.

RIR staffers assist with Operation Paintbrush

Members of the Richmond International Raceway staff assisted the Operation Paintbrush program in Henrico County this week by fixing up a local resident’s home through much-needed repairs. Staff members helped to scrape, paint, repair railings and gutters and give the landscaping a facelift.

“We recognize our responsibility of giving back to our neighbors in Henrico County,” said Richmond International Raceway president Dennis Bickmeier. “In the short amount of time I’ve been here, I realize what a great community this is in which to live, work and play. The Richmond International Raceway team is committed to our volunteer efforts, and Henrico County’s Operation Paintbrush is a great opportunity to continue that initiative.”
