Varina teen competes for Snow Queen title

Varina teen Unity Bowling is one of three finalists for the 2016 Snow Queen title at the Children's Museum of Richmond. Finalists can apply during their junior year of high school and are selected based on their previous and current service to the community, grades and ability to serve as needed during the coming year.

Parkway completion ends four-decade wait


Residents of the nearby Eagles Creek and Eagles Ridge communities joined in the party with county supervisors, planning commission members, and public works officials – not to mention eager motorists – as Henrico County celebrated the long-awaited completion of the John Rolfe Parkway with a Nov. 8 ribbon-cutting ceremony at John Rolfe Commons.

Pumpkins away!

Henrico's first annual Punkin’ Dunkin’, postponed from its original pre-Halloween date due to rain, drew dozens of spectators to Lake Innsbrook Nov. 9 to cheer on pumpkin launchers of all ages.

Part of Innsbrook's Great Pumpkin Palooza benefiting The Faison School, the event featured a large trebuchet (dubbed “Harvest and Assault”) built by the trebuchet team of H&A Architects and Engineers, as well as a catapult-like device constructed by Highwoods Properties.

A jolly good time in Lakeside

Hundreds of shoppers spent an evening on Lakeside Avenue Nov. 11 as part of the annual “Holly Jolly Christmas” shopping event, which continued Nov. 12. Shoppers were able to take free trolley rides along the avenue Friday night to visit shops and the Lakeside Farmers’ Market. The event was sponsored by the Lakeside Business Association.

Road improvement project begins at Richmond National Battlefield Park

Improvements to more than eight miles of roads and parking areas throughout the Richmond National Battlefield Park's battlefield units are beginning this week. The $2.2 million project will involve repaving and upgrading roadways that serve around 200,000 visitors to the park per year, as well as residential areas in Henrico and Hanover counties. A Richmond area contractor, Lane Construction, is slated to do the work, which will support more than 50 jobs in the region.

‘Parade of Homes’ underway

The Home Building Association of Richmond’s 2011 Parade of Homes began Oct. 1, marking the 60th consecutive year of the event in the Richmond region. This year’s event includes 52 new homes and two remodeled homes built by 28 member builders; more than half are decorated models.

Bark in the Park


Sharon Mills, a 10-year volunteer with the Henrico Humane Society, and foster dog Mr. Wiggles joined hundreds of other attendees at the annual Bark in the Park at Deep Run Park Oct. 1, sponsored by the Humane Society and the county.
