The Christmas spirit was alive in Varina Dec. 13, as the Varina Toy Parade rolled along Osborne Turnpike (featuring Henrico Christmas Mother Becky Goshorn, above) to the Osborne Boat Landing, where hundreds of spectators then gathered to watch the James River Boat Parade of Lights.
The public will have an opportunity to learn about potential transportation solutions for the Route 5 corridor in Eastern Henrico and the City of Richmond during a public meeting May 31 in Richmond.
A number of regional and state entities have been studying the corridor between Laburnum Avenue and 7th Street downtown for months and will present conceptual alternatives during next week's open house, which will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at VDOT's Central Office Auditorium, 1221 E. Broad Street in Richmond.

Students and alumni of the College of William & Mary take pride in the fact that theirs is the second-oldest college in America, pre-dated only by Harvard.
Those in the know – and with a competitive bent – like to point out that when it comes to vision, forethought, and planning for the university, W&M beat Harvard to the punch by decades.
The first university in America actually was chartered in 1618, and slated for construction on 10,000 riverfront acres in what is now Varina.
Teachers at nine Henrico public schools may be eligible to receive $5,000 performance-pay bonuses, as part of Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell's "Opportunity to learn" education initiative, which he officially launched today.
The initiative offers 57 school districts in Virginia the opportunity to provide the incentives to new or current teachers at schools within their districts that are hard to staff.
If only for a few hours, cancer was vanquished by laughter the evening of April 2.
But vanquished it was at the American Legion hall in Varina, as a bevy of 13 male beauties competed to raise funds for the American Cancer Society -- and honor the memory of the late Shelby Layne Bowery.
Flaunting names like “Scarlett,” “Jezzabelle,” “Showgirl Pearl,” and “Waynonna Juggs,” contestants sashayed down the aisle, bumping and grinding to various musical themes -- and stopping at nothing to coax another dollar in tips out of onlookers.
Varina residents will have the opportunity to meet their representatives in the Virginia General Assembly at the next town meeting of Varina District Supervisor Jim Donati. The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday, April 18 at the Henrico Theatre, 305 E. Nine Mile Road.
Andrew Armstrong, principal at Rolfe Middle School, has been named the R.E.B. Distinguished Educational Leadership Award winner for Henrico County. Armstrong is one of four principals in the metro Richmond area selected to receive the annual award. Jodie Brinkmann, principal of Echo Lake Elementary, was named runner-up.
The Henrico County Board of Supervisors will hold public hearings on the county’s 2011 magisterial district reapportionment plan at its regularly scheduled meetings at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 12 and Tuesday, April 26 in the Government Center Board Room, 4301 E. Parham Road.
