Henrico to hold June 8 open house on Route 5 Corridor/Marion Hill study

The Henrico County Planning Department will hold an open house Thursday, June 8 for residents and other members of the public to provide input for a study of the Route 5 Corridor/Marion Hill areas.

The open house will be held from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Varina Area Library, 1875 New Market Road. The meeting’s informal structure will allow the public to attend at their convenience and to ask questions and discuss the study one on one with Planning staff.

Road improvement project begins at Richmond National Battlefield Park

Improvements to more than eight miles of roads and parking areas throughout the Richmond National Battlefield Park's battlefield units are beginning this week. The $2.2 million project will involve repaving and upgrading roadways that serve around 200,000 visitors to the park per year, as well as residential areas in Henrico and Hanover counties. A Richmond area contractor, Lane Construction, is slated to do the work, which will support more than 50 jobs in the region.

Civil War history comes to life

Mike Powell discusses various types of cannon munitions used during the Civil War, at a living history presentation at Fort Harrison in Varina Sept. 25. The event concluded three days of Civil War commemoration as part of Henrico’s 400th anniversary.

Movin’ & Groovin’ 5K Run/Walk planned Aug. 27 at Dorey Park

The eighth annual Movin and Groovin Event for pancreatic cancer research will take place at Dorey Park in Varina this Saturday, Aug. 27. The event, presented by Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, will feature a 5K run, a two-mile walk and a kids' fun run through the park.

Entertainment will be provided by DJ Luke Gibson, along with live music by Haze and the Transients, juggling by Jonathan Austin, PT Moonwalks and balloon fun with Miss Sheri the Clown.

County’s first dog park being planned at Dorey Park

Canines of Henrico County soon will have a new place to roam.

Henrico County's first public dog park is scheduled to open in Varina's Dorey Park later this year.

The dog park will be located on about one acre of land near the pond at the park, on the opposite side of a gravel parking lot. Construction is expected to begin this month, with completion anticipated by late September, according to Al Azzarone, parks planning supervisor for the Henrico Division of Recreation and Parks.

Varina town meeting June 20 to examine reservoir project, education foundation

The next town meeting of Varina District Supervisor Jim Donati will examine the efforts of the Henrico Education Foundation and will provide information about the Cobbs Creek Water Supply Reservoir project. The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday, June 20 at the Henrico Theatre, 305 E. Nine Mile Road.

Paddling event raises funds, spirits

Three-year-old Kindred Worrell, the youngest participant in the 19th Annual Varina Lions Canoe-a-thon, didn't have much choice when it came to attending. But she enjoyed the 10-mile cruise, looking at kayaks and fishing a feather out of the James, just the same.

Her father, Sgt. Timothy Worrell of the Virginia Dept. of Game and Inland Fisheries, visited Kindred frequently along the way as he escorted several dozen canoes and kayaks from Rocketts Landing to Osborne Landing.

And Kindred's mother, Jennifer, pronounced the journey a relaxing and much-needed episode of "tornado therapy" for herself and fellow teacher Angela Paust.

Route 5 Corridor Study meeting planned May 31

The public will have an opportunity to learn about potential transportation solutions for the Route 5 corridor in Eastern Henrico and the City of Richmond during a public meeting May 31 in Richmond.

A number of regional and state entities have been studying the corridor between Laburnum Avenue and 7th Street downtown for months and will present conceptual alternatives during next week's open house, which will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at VDOT's Central Office Auditorium, 1221 E. Broad Street in Richmond.
