The Benefits of a Third-Party Payroll Provider
There have been enough changes to payroll processing and reporting over the last few years to make anyone’s head spin.

COBRA Credits, HIRE Act, the reduction of an employee’s share of Social Security from 6.2 percent to 4.2 percent, the elimination of payments at the bank with the 8109 coupons. The list goes on and on.

Fortunately, there are professionals out there who help guide small businesses through this maze of confusion – third party payroll providers.

The Entrepreneur’s Corner

Some business owners are asking themselves a difficult question, “Is now the time to sell?” They missed cashing out in the great run up in value during the middle of the last decade and have worked diligently to restructure in the “new economy.” And they now think this is as good as it’s going to get for a while.

Business owners have devoted significant time and effort in retooling their businesses, only to see their own pay diminish. Or certainly pale in comparison to what they once made. Now with the economy looking like it will take a considerable amount of time to rebound, has a fatigue factor set in? Are owners burnt out and feeling that the effort to rebuild will take too long to pay off?

The Entrepreneur’s Corner

Here’s an important question for busy business owners – what’s next for your company? Not just tomorrow or even in the months ahead, but when the time comes that you or one of your key employees retires or leaves the organization unexpectedly?

The Entrepreneur’s Corner

While the summer has brought mixed signals regarding the struggling economy, there are signs that consumers are beginning to spend again and it appears that a few companies are beginning to re-hire workers they had to lay off months ago.

As a new business owner who looks forward to marking the first anniversary of operating my own retail franchise, I certainly hope a consistent economic recovery comes sooner rather than later. As I establish myself as a franchise owner and discover the benefits of being my own boss I wonder if other hard-working individuals have considered franchise ownership as a career.

Moving your business stinks. It’s difficult, it’s expensive, and every step of the process takes a lot of time. But sometimes, and more often than not, the right space can make the business in the same way the right handshake can win the job.

There are so many options for business of all sizes. Even though Metro Richmond is a relatively small commercial market, there’s still every type of space imaginable. Making the wrong decision can actually hurt your business, so it makes sense to tackle it head-on. Think Gandhi with a little sprinkle of Bobby Knight – patience and grit pay off. And you should start by asking a lot of questions:

Ever heard someone say: “My business just needs more business, we just need more exposure.”

Inevitably, they may get more exposure, but often, no more business. Exposure is necessary, but it does not translate into more business.

Often times “marketing” makes us think of corporate marketing plans, big budgets, and ads everywhere we turn. Small business owners have different needs, and need to scale their marketing efforts to strategies that can be effective without the big expenditures.

Most businesses today have an online presence or are considering the process of creating one. However, just having an online presence isn’t enough. Is your website doing what you want it to do?

Some websites actually may have an undesired effect on prospective clients or, worse, drive traffic to your competition. While these unfortunate problems could occur for any number of reasons, usually, the solution is simple and easily remedied.

A business name is important. It can tell the public what you offer, it can distinguish the business from others and it can cause the business owners problems if not carefully considered.

Many new business owners spend a great deal of time thinking up their business names without clearing the name before using it and then not properly using it once they get going. A business name is the commercial name a business uses and it may not be the same as the name of the corporation or limited liability company that owns the business.

The Entrepreneur’s Corner

We discover a simple truth as adults – life isn’t much different once we reach the point deemed “older and wiser.”

Take events, for example. It wasn’t too long ago that your biggest concern was whether or not everyone would come to your birthday party. Now as a business owner, you may very well find yourself in the same position.
