Local doctors partner to combat childhood obesity

Volunteers from Ortho On-Call, Advanced Orthopaedics, a division of OrthoVirginia, U-Turn Sports, and Henrico Police Athletic League met Aug. 25 to sort through and clean more than 1,000 pieces of sports equipment they recently collected through AdvanceItUp!. AIU is a community initiative designed to increase recreation options and
active living at home and outside the home for area kids who do not have access to usable sports equipment. From June 1-30, Advanced Orthopaedics and Ortho On-Call collected gently-used items to benefit deserving children in the region through the partnerships and programs of RVA U-Turn Sports and the Henrico Police Athletic League.

Henrico resident inducted into DLA Aviation Hall of Fame

Defense Logistics Agency Aviation inducted its 34th Hall of Fame recipient, Glen Allen resident Mary Studevant, during its 2016 awards ceremony June 16 at the Frank B. Lotts Conference Center in Richmond.

Studevant held numerous civilian supervisory and non-supervisory positions within the group for more than 30 years. She began in 1966 as a secretary and continued for more than 17 years in the acquisition field.

“Studevant’s transformative leadership style led to improvements throughout DSCR and DLA Headquarters recognizing DLA Aviation as the Center of Excellence for Executive Level Conferences,” said Air Force Brig. Gen. Allan Day.

As part of GIANT Food Stores and MARTIN’S Food Markets’ annual Support Our Troops in-store campaign, customers and associates made their largest donation to date – $623,905 – to The United Service Organizations Inc. (USO), a nonprofit organization that provides programs and services to soldiers and their families. The campaign took place May 8-21. In addition, through the annual Women in Leadership Conference sponsored by GIANT/MARTIN’S, associates presented USO of Pennsylvania and Southern New Jersey (Liberty USO) with a donation of 46 tons of food, cleaning and health care items to assist military families in local communities. Since Support Our Troops began in 2005, GIANT/MARTIN’S customers and associates have donated more than $4 million to the USO.

Through SEARCH, disabled students find answers

With that quote, Project SEARCH Director Jennifer McDonough thanked the five graduates of this year's program during a ceremony June 10 at Bon Secours St. Mary's Hospital in Henrico, telling them that their hard work and dedication had paid off.

Project SEARCH – a program that began in 2009 and has snowballed into a nationwide organization with programs in more than 400 communities – provides yearlong opportunities for high school students with autism and other disabilities to train and work within hospitals.

50-year Beth Sholom employee honored

Mary Delores Lee recently celebrated 50 years of service at Beth Sholom Lifecare Community, where she is known fondly as "Miss Mary." She joined the dietary department at Beth Sholom Home for the Jewish Aged five decades ago, when it was still located at Libbie and Fitzhugh avenues in Richmond. She continued with the organization after it relocated to Henrico's Far West End in the late 1980s and now continues to work there two days a week.

“I just love the residents, and I tell the younger staff to always be kind and fair to the residents," she said.

Henrico-based Lansing Building Products has again been named to the ProSales100 listing of the top 100 building products distributors in the country. Lansing Building Products, headquartered in the region since 1955, is an independent wholesale-distributor operating 78 branches across the nation specializing in exterior building products and employs more than 700 associates. The company earned the No. 16 spot on this year’s ranking.

Henrico students honored with Wegmans scholarship

Three Henrico students are among the graduating seniors who received a $500 scholarship as part of Wegmans’ Employee Scholarship Program.

In total eight local students were given the scholarship, which is awarded to student-employees who exemplify the family-owned company’s values: Caring, respect, high standards, empowerment and making a difference. The three Henrico students are: Michelle Swanson – Deep Run High School, Stephen Tivenan – Mills E. Godwin High School and Olivia Williams – Glen Allen High School.

Long & Foster’s Innsbrook Office to participate in company’s Community Service Day

The Innsbrook office of Long & Foster Real Estate will take part in the company’s 19th annual Community Service Day June 8. Innsbrook office representatives will volunteer with the Virginia Home for Boys and Girls.

“We are excited to volunteer with this great organization by staining the fences and benches that surround their 55-acre property. Since they opened in 1846, they have helped so many children and families in the Richmond area. We are more than happy to give our time and services to help them in any way we can,” said Leigh Broughton, agent services coordinator for the Innsbrook office.

Cobb Technologies opens new Glen Allen facility

After more than a quarter-century in business, Cobb Technologies has expanded with the grand opening of new headquarters in Glen Allen.

Its new 63,000-square-foot facility, located at 1000 Technology Park Drive in Glen Allen, formerly was a Hohner musical instrument facility. It was renovated this year to fit Cobb's needs and features a large storage and distribution warehouse. The new space has created better organization within the 120-employee company, Cobb President Toni Gorveatt said.

“The biggest thing it has done for us is efficiency,” said Gorveatt. “What its done for the company is allow us to bring all of our operations under one roof.”
