Collegiate School science teacher Stewart Williamson has been selected to receive a 2015 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST).
The PAEMST program recognizes teachers for their contributions to the teaching and learning of mathematics and science and is administered by the National Science Foundation on behalf of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.
Stephen D. Hickman begins his tenure as Collegiate School’s new Head of School today, arriving from Little Rock, Ark., where he served for six years as Head of Episcopal Collegiate School, a pre-K-12 college preparatory school.
"Collegiate’s demonstrated record of and commitment to preparing young people for our rapidly changing and challenging world are unparalleled,” Hickman said this week. “To be asked to help lead this outstanding school community is very exciting and humbling. I can’t wait to roll-up my sleeves and get to work."
An economics class he took in college has resulted in long-term payoffs for Rob Wedge -- and for growing numbers of students at The Collegiate School as the well.
In 1996, as a history teacher at Winchester (Massachusetts) High School, Wedge was approached by the assistant principal, who was casting around for someone to take over his part-time teaching duties.
Noticing the economics class on Wedge's college transcript, and not wanting to turn over his economics class to someone who knew nothing about the subject, the administrator asked Wedge if he'd be willing to teach part-time while working on his master's degree at Boston University.
"Being a starving college student," recalls Wedge, "I happily took the job."
