The counseling program at Henrico County’s Fairfield Middle School recently earned an elite designation from the American School Counselor Association, which named it a “Recognized ASCA Model Program.”
The designation means that Fairfield’s counseling department has implemented a national model stressing comprehensive, data-driven school counseling. Schools must have an established counseling foundation, deliver services effectively, put management systems in place and have ways to measure counseling performance.
Fewer than 600 schools nationwide have received the honor since it was first awarded in 2004. The designation is valid for five years, after which schools must reapply.
Congressman Bobby Scott, whose Third District includes a portion of Henrico County, recently received the National Head Start Association’s PROMISE (PRotecting Opportunities for our Most Important Students Early) Award for his commitment to advance the needs of Head Start children and families. Scott is the ranking member of the U.S. House Committee on Education and the Workforce.
More than 300 Head Start teachers gathered in Washington, D.C. recently to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Head Start program, an early childhood education program.

Public high school students in Henrico County will have the opportunity to earn a guaranteed teaching job when they graduate college, thanks to the new Teacher Scholars’ program, which Henrico County Public Schools launched this semester.
The Henrico school division, along with other systems nationwide, has witnessed a shortage in the number of teachers in areas such as math, Spanish, exceptional education, technology education and family and consumer sciences. The new Henrico program will offer an incentive to students and hopefully spark an interest in teaching.
