Virginia launches redesigned state website

Virginia's official state government website has a new look.

The state today announced the launch of the revamped Virginia.gov, which includes an updated design focusing on new information delivery and web interface tools. The functional improvements and content additions are designed to reflect changing social and internet browsing habits and the evolving role of citizen interaction with government, according to state officials.

The new site includes a larger presence of social media products and more robust search capability, along with improved listing and search capability for state online services. It also includes an enhanced mapping capability, including the capability to detect a user’s physical location and automatically display the corresponding area on the base map – a technology known as GeoIP

In addition, the website features a new mobile application.

“Technology is a very important component of Governor McDonnell’s administration and is essential for a transparent and ‘citizen-centric’ government," said Virginia Secretary of Technology Jim Duffey. "Virginia.gov is the main portal to Virginia government. It is key that citizens are able to engage the Commonwealth at anytime and from any place.  The new Virginia.gov offers both improved citizen services and a more efficient delivery of service.”

The site is produced and managed for the state through a contractual relationship established between the Virginia Information Technologies Agency (VITA) and Virginia Interactive, LLC., a subsidiary of NIC.
