Villa completes $10M capital campaign

St. Joseph’s Villa recently completed its five-year, $10-million capital campaign, which funded improvements to campus safety, accessibility and infrastructure. Known as the “Believing Is Seeing Campaign,” this was the first large-scale fundraising campaign undertaken by the Villa in its 178-year history.

With the support of 510 campaign donors—one-third of whom gave to the Villa for the first time—the amount raised totaled more than $10.7 million. All donors were invited to witness the public unveiling of the campaign total and walkway stones set in their honor Sept. 27 at a celebration on the Villa grounds.

“The Villa’s transformation literally paves the way for new and exciting opportunities to better serve the region’s most at-risk and disadvantaged populations for generations to come,” said Kathleen Burke Barrett, chief executive officer of St. Joseph’s Villa.

The campaign helped to fund:

• a new perimeter road and pedestrian avenue to separate pedestrians from high-volume vehicular traffic and safely connect campus resources;

• increased handicapped accessibility across campus;

• a new underground infrastructure and fiber optic technology;

• a renovation of the gymnasium;

• a new culinary arts center that trains students in life and career skills;

• restoration of the central garden and green spaces to promote modern practices in outdoor learning and therapy.

Henrico-based brand merchandising company NewClients, Inc. has changed its name to Boost Promotional Branding.

Lidl competition offers shoppers chance to win NYC trip


Three Lidl shoppers will win trips to New York City to receive a first-look at the Esmara by Heidi Klum collection and attend an international runway event debuting the collection. The contest is open to residents of Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina – the three states in which Lidl currently operates grocery stores. Earnhardt gives Redskins a ride


Dale Earnhardt Jr., driver of the Hendrick Motorsports No. 88, stopped at Richmond Raceway Aug. 8 in advance of the track’s NASCAR weekend in September. He was joined by five players from the Washington Redskins, who were in town for the team's training camp, which concluded Aug. 14. The day in Richmond gave Earnhardt and the Redskins players an opportunity to see how the athletes compete in their respective sports. > Read more.

READ Center a finalist for $25k grant


The READ Center is a top-200 cause finalist in State Farm’s Neighborhood Assist program, making it eligible to earn a $25,000 grant to support adult literacy in the Richmond region. The 40 organizations from across the nation with the most votes will win grants.

The READ Center, based in Henrico, provides classroom instruction and one-to-one tutoring to adults with very low literacy. > Read more.
