Verizon working to repair phone lines

While Dominion Virginia Power crews are working to restore power to nearly 60,000 Henrico residents who are without it, Verizon officials also are working in the region to replace damaged poles and repair facilities damaged by water and wind.

But Verizon spokesman Harry Mitchell told the Citizen that despite some damage, "our landline network survived Irene well.

"Our teams of technicians are out assessing the damage and making repairs," Mitchell said. "Many of our facilities are on backup generators or batteries that enable us to provide voice phone service even though the power is out in some areas."

Some Verizon customers in the Richmond region are without phone, internet and TV service as the result of power outages or other storm-related issues, Mitchell said, declining to provide specific numbers for Henrico.

The numbers "rise and fall virtually by the minute based on new repair reports coming in, repairs made by our technicians and the restoration of power, which in turn will often restore some of our services."

Verizon's restoration efforts are partially dependent upon the efforts of road accessibility and restoration of power, he said.

"We're committed to restoring service for customers as quickly, and safely, as we can," Mitchell said.
