VEI, HCA break ground on eye care center

The Virginia Eye Institute (VEI) and HCA Virginia Health System broke ground May 18 on a new eye care center in Towne Center West site, despite threatening storms that forced the proceedings under a tent.

Manning the shovels at the ceremony were (left to right) Walter Bundy, III, VEI physician; Chris Carney, VEI CEO; Virgil Hazelett, Henrico County manager; Tedrick Johnson, vice president operations, HCA Capital Division; Anthony D. Sakowski, Jr., VEI physician; and J. Paul Bullock, VEI physician. When completed in January, the 16,000-square-foot building will feature services for general ophthalmology, pediatric ophthalmology, ocular plastics, optometry and a full-service optical shop.

Henrico Junior 4-H camp registration open

For parents looking to keep their kids outside and away from the video games this summer, the Virginia Cooperative Extension is still accepting registrations for the 2013 Henrico Junior 4-H Camp.

The camp will be held June 17-23, and is open to boys and girls ages 9-13. A total of 10 spaces for boys and 27 spaces for girls remain available, and registration is open until May 24. The cost is $230, which includes lodging, meals, programs, instructional materials and charter bus transportation. > Read more.

Popular Short Pump spot offers upscale comfort, flavors

The Wine Loft opened in West Broad Village in January 2010, offering a full bar with wine, beer, spirits and a kitchen with tapas-style snacks. It offers a seasonal patio area along Whittall Way. Its walk-in wine “humidor” in plain view from the bar offers more than 85 wines by the glass ($6-$65) and about 250 by the bottle ($28 and up), with some emphasis on Italian wines.
