Twin Hickory to be awarded for STEM success

Twin Hickory Elementary School has been recognized by the Virginia Math and Science Coalition’s "Programs that Work” for their “Children’s Engineering = STEM Success” program. Twin Hickory’s program reaches out to students as well as parents and the community in an effort to excite students to 21st century skills to solve real-world problems using math and science. It also encourages students to find solutions to everyday problems.

Twin Hickory continues to use data to improve the program, and faculty and staff members frequently review SOL and benchmark data to design STEM opportunities that will benefit the school's students. The program has led to students moving from a "pass" rating on the math and science SOL to a "pass advanced," and teachers now use online tools to ensure their lessons are meeting the 21st century mark.

The school has invited parents to share in their students' creations as well as share them with friends and family online. Twin Hickory also has established partnerships with community businesses to help students prepare for the jobs of the future and also prepare for – and solve – problems that might occur later on.

School leaders and teachers from throughout the county have visited and continue to visit Twin Hickory to learn about how they can implement the program in their schools.
