Technology police

In today's business environment, many companies struggle to respond when former employees steal or delete information, because they lack computer forensics knowledge.

However, a growing and unique company located in Henrico specializes in computer forensics by aiding businesses in legal matters through the gathering of evidence and the recovery of lost or hidden data.

Seltek Technology Solutions (STS) is a computer firm and technology company which provides IT support to companies across Central Virginia as well as computer forensics assistance to clients throughout the country. The company was founded in February 1998 by Ron Greene, president, and Patrick Logan, vice-president.

In addition to IT support, STS provides a unique service to its customers in its department of computer forensics. This sector of STS has been in operation for three years, serving anyone in need of expert assistance with computer forensics-related cases.

Forensic investigators on the STS staff work to retrieve hidden or deleted data to use as potential evidence in employment related cases, law suits, family law, divorce cases and product liability cases.

A typical client for STS is a corporation that suspects that a former employee has stolen information from the company and presented it to his or her new employers. In this circumstance, STS investigators would collect electronic data from computers, cell phones, servers and other forms of media as potential evidence. They would subsequently preserve this evidence and use it in an analysis process as defense.

Conversely, an individual could come to STS to prove his or her innocence regarding accusations of stealing information. STS investigators use cutting-edge computer forensics software to store evidence in an effort to certify that this individual did not take information.

STS has dealt with cases involving theft, counterfeit, copyright, fraud, breach of contract, bankruptcy, and wrongful dismissal, among a few. The computer forensics division of STS serves clients nationally and is one of the only companies in Central Virginia that provides both IT support and computer forensics services.

Not only is STS unique for its specialized area of computer forensics, but the company also prides itself on its high regard for its clients and level of customer service.

“We stand apart from our competitors by our level of service and customer service,” said Logan.

Brad Berkshire, vice president of Planet Data Solutions, who has used STS for data collections, can attest to that assertion.

“I was impressed with Seltek’s responsiveness. They are always available and are available on short notice. They were very professional and I would recommend their services,” said Berkshire.

As the demand for this new branch of IT work is growing, so is STS.

“In the future, we would like to grow our computer forensics division and become a major provider for Central Virginia,” said Logan.

Douglass Burtch, attorney for Macaulay Burtch Law Firm, worked with Patrick Logan on a presentation for continuing legal education (CLE) for private and in-house lawyers. They collaborated on the presentation, in which Burtch spoke about the subject of employer privacy rights, while Logan spoke about the forensics aspect of the subject.

Burtch said, “He provided knowledgeable and insightful information for the lawyers. He was recommended to me as someone very knowledgeable in the field of computer forensics, and he was a great guy to work with.”

Sam Kaufman, attorney at Owens and Owens Law Firm said, “Seltek has excellent services. Since our law firm began, we have been using Seltek because we were so impressed with the prior work that they had done.

“We use them for both IT work and forensics work if we have a case that requires it. Seltek provides more than satisfactory service and results that I would recommend.”
