Students share Thanksgiving thoughts

In preparation for Thanksgiving, the Citizen asked several Henrico County elementary school classes to answer questions about the holiday. Their responses appear here. (Special thanks are due to Henrico County Public Schools and the teachers and administrators at each school for their assistance in this effort.)
How would you make your favorite Thanksgiving food?



Mrs. Lassiter's first-grade class, Lakeside Elementary School

I would buy a turkey and bake it for an hour at 20 degrees.

I would buy a turkey and cook it in the oven for 5 minutes. I would turn the oven to "Hot."

I would put a ham in the oven and cook it for 9 minutes at 4 degrees.

I would put a turkey in the oven for about 30 minutes at 50 degrees, take it out, cut it open and put stuffing in it. Then I would put a ham in the oven for the same amount of time and do the same thing, but maybe put mashed potatoes inside.

I would put the turkey in the oven, turn it to 26 degrees and cook it for a couple hours.

I would put a ham in the oven and cook it for 4 hours at 20 degrees.

I would buy macaroni and cheese from the store and ask my brother to help me cook it. I would cook it in the oven for like 30 seconds at 5 degrees to make it soft.

My favorite Thanksgiving food is turkey. I would buy my turkey at the store and put it in the oven at 2 degrees for 3 hours.

My favorite Thanksgiving food is turkey. I would help my mom cook it. First put it in a little hot oven for 30 minutes. Put sauce on the turkey when it comes out of the oven.

My favorite food to eat on Thanksgiving is bread. I would cut it out and I would eat it with jelly.

My favorite Thanksgiving food is chocolate cake. I would put the chocolate thing in with some water, oil and eggs. Use the little mixer thing. Then put it in the oven and wait for a little minute for the oven to warm up. Bake the cake in the oven.

My favorite thing to eat on Thanksgiving is turkey. I would roast it on the thing that goes round and round. I would eat mashed potatoes with it.

My favorite Thanksgiving food is turkey. I would put it in the oven at 12 degrees for 30 minutes. I like to eat it with bread.

My favorite Thanksgiving food is chocolate chip cookies. Take dough from the refrigerator and cut it and put it in the oven. Add chocolate chips and sprinkles and then eat it.

My favorite thing to eat on Thanksgiving is chocolate cake. I would put the chocolate mix in the bowl. Add milk, eggs and water and mix it with the mixer. I would put it in the oven.

My favorite Thanksgiving food is chocolate chip cookies. Put the cookies in the stove for 15 minutes.

My favorite Thanksgiving food is pumpkin pie. Cut the top of the pumpkin. Put it in a pan and cook it for 30 seconds. Then I would put it in the oven and bake it. I would eat it with a cherry on top.

My favorite Thanksgiving food is bread. Put it in the oven to cook for 4 minutes. Take it out of the oven and add butter.

I would get some chickens, open it up and get the chicken out of it. I would cook it in the microwave for 2 minutes. I would eat it with some barbecue sauce.

My favorite food to eat on Thanksgiving is brown cookies. Put square things on a plate, cook it in the stove for 8 hours.

My favorite Thanksgiving food is turkey. I would get a turkey from Food Lion. I would fry it in a pan for 6 minutes. I would eat it with some chicken.

My favorite food is turkey. To make it I would put it in the oven and then I would take it out and pat seasoning on it.

My favorite food is brisket and gravy. I would get it from the grocery story and put it in the oven, cook it and cut it. I put the
gravy on and eat it.

I like mash potatoes and gravy. I would buy it and then I would put it in the oven and serve it and eat it. I hope my family would enjoy it!

The food I like is hot dogs and sometimes I eat applesauce. I would get apples and them cook them, then you get a bowl and you put it in there.

To make dumplings, I would get some dough and you roll it up and then roll it into a triangle then you put it in the oven. Chicken and vegetables is in the inside.

To make pumpkin pie, I would get a pie pan and pie crust and pumpkin. I would put the pie crust in the pan but not in the middle. And then put the pumpkin in and then put the pie crust on top and put it in the oven.

Lions Club donates backpacks to elementary school

The Richmond West Breakfast Lions Club (based in western Henrico) recently donated 59 backpacks to the Westover Hills Elementary School on Jahnke Road.

Glen Allen student to perform at Carnegie Hall

Thanks to a first-place win in The American Protege International Vocal Competition 2014, Glen Allen High School student Matija Tomas will travel to New York City to perform at Carnegie Hall in December.

At the first-place winners recital in Weill Hall, Matija will perform Giacomo Puccini’s opera aria, “Chi il bel sogna di doretta.” She will perform with other vocalists from around the world and have the opportunity to win other awards and scholarships.

Locally, Thomas has performed with Richmond’s renowned Glorious Christmas Nights, Christian Youth Theatre, and WEAG’s Urban Gospel Youth Choir. > Read more.

Gayton Baptist Church dedicates new outreach center


The John Rolfe YMCA and Gayton Baptist Church have partnered in an effort to bring greater health and wellness opportunities to the community.

Through this partnership, the John Rolfe Y will run Youth Winter Sports programs, including basketball and indoor soccer, in Gayton’s newly renovated $5.5 million outreach center that features a new gymnasium, youth and teen space, social space with café, meeting space and full service commercial kitchen. > Read more.

CAT Theatre to host auditions

CAT Theatre will hold auditions for Book of Days on Sunday, Oct. 26 and Monday, Oct. 27, at 7 p.m. each day. Auditions will be held at CAT Theatre, 319 North Wilkinson Road in Henrico. Book of Days will run Jan. 23-Feb. 7 and is one of CAT’s submissions to the Acts of Faith Festival.

Book of Days, by Pulitzer Prize winner Lanford Wilson is an exploration of faith, justice, and corruption, amidst the backdrop of murder – and community theatre – in small town America. Book of Days was first written for and produced by Jeff Daniels Purple Rose Theatre Company of Michigan.

Director Leslie Cline is seeking five females between the ages of 20-65 and seven males between the ages of 24-65. > Read more.

CAT Theatre opens 51st season Oct. 24


CAT Theatre’s 51st season will open with Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure, which will run Oct. 24 through Nov. 8. The play is based on the original 1899 play by William Gillette and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and adapted by Steven Dietz, and was the winner of the 2007 Edgar Award for Best Mystery Play.

The story follows Holmes, whose career as the world’s greatest detective seems to have reached its end until he is confronted with a case far too tempting to ignore. When the King of Bohemia faces blackmail by famed opera singer, Irene Adler, Holmes and his companion Dr. Watson find themselves falling into the trap of evil genius Professor Moriarty. > Read more.
