Steward Earns ‘Visiting Scientists’ Grant
The Steward School recently earned a $50,000 matching challenge grant from The Edward E. Ford Foundation to fund a "Visiting Scientists Program" for the forthcoming Bryan Center for Science and Sustainability.
The program is designed to attract specialists with expertise in a wide range of disciplines including alternative energy, physics, hydrology, engineering, astronomy, sustainable architectural design and green construction methods and materials, organic gardening, natural resource management, geology, and environmental studies.
“The Bryan Center, a LEED-level designed facility surrounded by a three acre edible garden-schoolyard, will be a technological textbook-laboratory,” said Headmaster Ken Seward. “This is where students will analyze a constant flow of data fed from state-of-the-art smart-grid, real-time metering, enabling them to explore innovations in economic, environmental, and applied engineering decision making.

In Varina, one of the most anticipated events of the season is approaching. The 19th Annual Big Toy Parade will return on Dec 14, offering a “homey,” small-town feel that helps elicit holiday spirit among participants and spectators alike.
The parade, which begins at 3 p.m., is sponsored by the Battlefield Ruritans and Henrico County Parks and Recreation and is held in conjunction with the James River Boat Parade. It is led by a grand marshal along Old Osborne Turnpike and ends at the Osborne Boat Landing, where hundreds of community members gather to await nightfall and the arrival of lighted boats, concluding a festive holiday celebration. > Read more.
