Six veterans earn Congressional medals

Six distinguished veterans from the 7th U.S. Congressional District – including one Henrico resident – received the 2011 Congressional Veteran Commendation from U.S. Congressman Eric Cantor last month during a ceremony at the Virginia War Memorial. The CVC was created in 2002 to honor local veterans and preserve their testimonies of service and sacrifice for future generations.

Among the recipients was Henrico resident Sgt. Cecil M. Mayton, U.S. Army (retired). Mayton served from 1969 to 1975 and spent time in Vietnam. He was a member of Company “E,” 2nd Battalion (AirMobile) 327th Infantry, 1st Brigade, 101st Airborne Division and the 1st Air Cavalry Division. For his service, Mayton earned a Bronze Star, Army Commendation Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, National Defense Service Medal and a letter of appreciation from his commanding officer for his service within a recon platoon while serving with the 101st Airborne Division.

“I was proud to present the Congressional Veteran Commendation to six remarkable individuals in recognition of their extraordinary military service," Cantor said. "These brave men served our country with distinction and dedicated their lives to defending our freedom. We are forever grateful for their service and also thankful to their families for the sacrifices they have made over the years. As part of this award, each honoree's story will be made part of the Veterans
History Project at the Library of Congress and preserved for generations to come.”
