Student Government Association hosted its second annual Blue Devil Dash 5k in October. Among the hundreds of runners who participated, Troy Hartle, a resident of King William County, won first place with a time of 19:11, and senior cross-country runner Carneal Waddey, won second place.

Carneal is a middle distance and distance runner for the cross-country team. This is his first year participating in the Blue Devil Dash. He said his senior year was a good year to participate in everything he possibly could. Because running is one of his favorite things to do, the dash was the perfect opportunity. His goal was to come in first place because he wanted to show other people how good he and his team really are.

“My goal was to win and get under 21 minutes,” Carneal said.

Although Carneal won second place with a time of 19:36, he was disappointed. He had thought a first place finish was possible because he runs the same route every day to train for his cross-country races. Senior cross-country runner Kathleen Wilcox said she is proud of Carneal for representing the team and finishing in the top three.

“Even if he thought that he didn’t do well, I’m personally very proud of him because he still finished in the top three and that’s very good,” Kathleen said.
