School briefs - Hermitage Technical Center
Hermitage Technical Center holds a canned food drive every year. Students collect non-perishable food items that will be used at a Thanksgiving dinner. Hermitage Technical Center has collected from Nov. 5-16 and then will serve meals at the Greater Richmond Convention Center on Thanksgiving day from 9:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.
The Tech Ethics Society (an HTC student service organization) works in cooperation with The Giving Heart Foundation to run this contest between the a.m. classes, and then another between the p.m. classes, to see who can collect the largest number of cans. The collection provides a meal for families who may be having hard times; the homeless; and anyone who may be in need and alone on Thanksgiving.
Hundreds of tables are set up at the convention center, and people come and enjoy the meal that is provided for them. Last year the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) class won the a.m. competition with 326 donated items, and the Criminal Justice class won the p.m. competition with 100 donated items. HTC collected more than 1,000 items during last year’s drive, and we plan to beat that number with the collections this year.
Students and people from ages 14-24 can help out on this day, but spots are limited and fill quickly. Many Tech Ethics members and Criminal Justice students have signed up in hopes that this Thanksgiving they can make a difference in the lives of people who are in need.
Canoeing and kayaking enthusiasts soon will have a new access point to the Chickahominy River. VDOT, the James River Association and Henrico County Parks and Recreation are teaming up to establish a new site in Eastern Henrico.
The James River Association negotiated the deal with VDOT to procure official access to the area located just east of I-295 on North Airport Road in Sandston. The site includes a park-and-ride commuter lot bordering the Chickahominy River and has been an unofficial launch site used by paddlers for years. > Read more.

‘Dragon’ sequel is a rare part-two success story
Just like the toys those sequels inspire. What kid’s going to want a medium-sized dragon after the first How to Train Your Dragon ended with a beast the size of a skyscraper? They want something bigger and shinier; something that lights up or shoots little plastic firebolts.
Dreamworks certainly had this in mind for How to Train Your Dragon 2 – not just for the merchandising (truly, this is the franchise that will launch a thousand dragon-themed birthday parties), but for the film itself. > Read more.
Grab the kids and check out these fun family-friendly events taking place this weekend! Speed over to the Henrico Theatre for the film “Turbo” or watch “Dumbo” under the stars at Clarke-Palmore House Museum. Little ones can meet Thomas the Tank Engine at CMOR-Central or play at the Eastern Henrico Recreation Center. For all our top picks this weekend, click here! > Read more.
Don’t party too hard on the Fourth because a whole weekend of fun events await! Enjoy a classy date night without the kids at James River Cellars Winery’s second annual Smoke and Vine Festival. Another date night option is at the Richmond Funny Bone, where comedian April Macie will perform all weekend. The kids have their own options this weekend as well. Choose from storytime at Tuckahoe and Twin Hickory libraries or family-oriented karaoke at Aunt Sarah’s Pancake House – I hear they have hits from Disney’s “Frozen.” For all our top picks this weekend, click here! > Read more.
