School briefs - Henrico High School

At Henrico High School, there’s a little tradition that all the students love to hate called a clean sweep.

In order to deter students from being tardy to class, there will be a clean sweep at the start of the period sporadically throughout the week. When a clean sweep happens, Mrs. Fleming comes over the P.A. system and announces proudly for all citizens of HHS, “Teachers, please lock your doors. Do not admit students into your class unless they have a pass. Students, if you do not have a pass, please report to the South Cafeteria. This is a clean sweep!”

What makes the clean sweeps so much fun are the sayings that Mrs. Fleming cooks up in order to introduce them. Her creativity when it comes to the clean sweeps astounds students and staff alike. There are even T-shirts; the front of the shirt boasts “I (heart) clean sweeps” while the back lists some of the best clean sweep phrases such as, “For those of you that like a special treat, here comes a clean sweep,” “Close your doors and hide your babies, it’s time for clean sweep.” and “A day without a clean sweep is like a day without sunshine.”

The joy in Mrs. Fleming’s voice as she announces, “Just when you thought it was over, it ain’t over. This is clean sweep number two for today,” is unparalleled and shows how much fun tardiness can be.
