The Deep Run Marathon Dance may be almost three months away, but that doesn’t mean students aren’t buzzing about the upcoming event.

The DRMD is a 27-hour long dance during which the DRHS student community comes together and dances the night away, all the while raising money for local charities. To participate, individual students must raise $100. Many go above and beyond this measure.

This year, the event will be held on March 15-16. Sign-ups are Jan. 14-18.

Exceptional Education teacher David Kern and Health and PE teacher Kathleen Kern are the co-directors of the event. Helping them on this mission is the DRMD student committee, which consists of 51 students who aid in planning fundraisers and ideas for the dance.

The committee is pushing for more than 1,000 students to sign-up.

“The group is a good group,” David Kern said. “They have high expectations, and so do I.”

Last year, DRMD raised over $250,000. The DRMD has raised $863,000 in the course of its existence. That money has been distributed to many local charities and organizations.

“Our goal is not to break our own record every year, but break $1,000,000 over a seven year period,” Kern said. The committee is hoping to reach that mark this year.

Co-director Kathleen Kern is currently pregnant and due in January. “Her pregnancy leaves it somewhat to me,” husband David Kern said.

Despite this, students are anticipating the dance that changes lives and makes for a great event for the entire DRHS community.
