Henrico County VA

School Board - Tuckahoe District

LISA MARSHALL
1. Why should residents of your district elect you?
I have worked diligently, collaboratively and successfully with my fellow School Board members to lead the school system through some of the most difficult economic challenges Henrico County School system has faced in decades. While I know these difficult economic times have placed a large burden on our teachers, I am proud that our school system continues to provide a high quality education for students while keeping our outstanding programs in the areas of art, music and athletics strong. I am responsive to inquiries I receive from the citizens in the Tuckahoe district and strive to return e-mails and phone calls within 24 hours. I will continue to put the best interests of our students, teachers and parents above all else.

2. What will be your top focus if elected? Effectively and efficiently managing school system resources during the budget process in what is purportedly going to be another very difficult economic cycle. By that I mean advocating for students and teachers, while keeping core academic and enrichment programs strong. I will also continue to listen to all stakeholders to ensure that all have a voice in the education of our children.

3. What is the most critical issue: 1) facing your district? 2) facing the county as a whole? How do you propose to address these? The aging infrastructure of the schools in my district and meeting the needs of all our students while keeping our core academic rigor strong. I will address the infrastructure issue by working to insure the necessary resources are allocated to move forward with our Capital Improvement Plan. I will keep my focus on successful implementation of our long range plan designed to strengthen our academic programs by providing teachers with the resources, training and tools they need to be effective in the classroom so that every student may be successful.

4. How will you involve citizens in matters of government? I am proud of our Communities Priorities Workshop, an ongoing forum to provide all stakeholders a role in setting priorities for the school system and monitoring how successful we are in accomplishing the goals we set for our school system. The workshop brings together, students, parents, teacher, administrators and business leaders to discuss what they believe are the priorities on which Henrico County public schools should focus in preparing our students to be highly effective citizens.

5. What’s your favorite way to spend the weekend? Relaxing with my family and friends and visiting our two oldest children who are away at college. I also love playing with our pug dogs Lou, Babe and Yogi. You cannot help but laugh around a pug dog. They are wonderful stress relievers.

6. What personal or professional clubs or organizations are you a member of?
My family belongs to St. Bridget’s Church. I am a member of the Virginia State Bar, the Career and Technical Education Advisory Council; the Gifted Advisory Council; the ESL Advisory Committee of the School Board and a fabulous book club!

7. Additional information:
It is my great privilege and honor to serve my community on the Henrico County School Board. I look forward to serving four more years to the best of my ability and greatly appreciate the trust that has been placed in me by my community.
