School Board approves stricter GPA standards for high school athletes

UPDATE: FEB. 14, 4:46 PM – The Henrico County School Board today voted 4-1 to adopt stricter academic standards for high school athletes, requiring that they maintain 2.0 grade point averages in order to play school-sanctioned sports beginning in the 2013-14 school year.

Three Chopt District representative Diana Winston voted against the item on a technicality, arguing that the standards should have been adopted as new School Board policy rather than merely as updated school system regulations. But she said she strongly supported the tougher standards.

The standards will be implemented next year but will not be enforced until the 2014-15 school year. The phased-in approach is designed to allow athletes and teachers to become familiar with them in preparation for full implementation the following year.

They will require that students maintain either a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher or a GPA of 2.0 or higher in the preceding semester in order to be eligible to play sports. Athletes will be eligible to apply for a one-time waiver that could keep them eligible for one semester only if they do not meet either standard but do meet other system-established guidelines.

Currently, Henrico student athletes are bound only by the Virginia High School League academic requirements, which mandate a minimum 0.7 GPA.

Good food and fun, bargain prices

Pelon’s serves up a good mix of variety, value

I first stumbled into Pelon's on a Wednesday night, lured by the promise of $2 tacos and beers. At those prices, I had assumed the place was a hole in the wall, and was pleasantly surprised by the spacious, pleasant interior.

Having spent my teen summers in Virginia Beach surfing, I also felt instantly at home amid the ocean-themed decor. From the ride-the-waves posters lining the walls and the TV displaying non-stop surfing footage, to the foosball table and enormous spools serving as tables, Pelon's is a delight for beach lovers and surfing fans. Reading the menu is part of the entertainment here, as patrons browse burrito choices that include Rip Tide, The Curl, Hawaiian Pipeline and Big Kahuna. > Read more.
