Restaurant watch

The following are routine and complaint inspection reports for Henrico County food establishments inspected recently by the Henrico Health Department, according to Virginia Department of Health guidelines. Deficiencies are noted as “critical” (posing a direct or immediate threat to the safety of the food being served) or “non-critical” (representing a failure of cleaning or maintenance). Inspections represent only a snapshot of the establishment on a specific date and time and may not be representative of its overall cleanliness, according to the VDH. Unless noted, all reported violations were corrected at the time of inspection or shortly thereafter.

APR. 28
Torque Club at RIR, 600 East Laburnum Avenue – No critical violations reported and one non-critical violation reported.

APR. 30
Banzara, 4032 Cox Road – One critical violation reported (numerous drain flies observed in bar area, soda gun holsters found dirty, soiled cloths observed lying on sinks) and four non-critical violations reported.
Cafe at the Weinstein JCC, 5403 Monument Avenue – One critical violation reported (meat slicer found dirty to sight and touch, especially the underside of its blade) and no non-critical violations reported.
Eastern Carry Out, 9024 West Broad Street – Two critical violations reported (shell eggs observed over pork in walk-in refrigerator; dried chicken meat observed on slicer) and no non-critical violations reported.
Einstein Brothers Bagels, 5607 West Broad Street – No violations reported.
Hawk's BBQ & Seafood, 8191 Brook Road – No critical violations reported and two non-critical violations reported.
Lakewood Manor, 1900 Lauderdale Drive – One critical violation reported (tuna salad and pimento cheese observed at improper temperatures in the third floor healthcare refrigerator, and refrigerator found at 40 degrees) and no non-critical violations reported.
Quizno's Classic Subs, 8906 West Broad Street – No violations reported.
Rivers Edge Elementary School, 11600 Holman Ridge Road – No violations reported.
Sticks Kebob Shop, 1700 Willow Lawn Drive – No violations reported.
Sunrise Harvest Cafe, 6606 West Broad Street – Three critical violations reported (employee observed drinking from cup while in prep area; quat in three-compartment sink observed at improper level – none detected; no consumer advisory on menu board for eggs or burgers that can be ordered/prepared undercooked) and three non-critical violations reported.
Villa Pizza, 11800 West Broad Street – One critical violation reported (no date labels found on cooked and ready-to-eat containers of food in walk-in) and no non-critical violations reported.
Waffle House, 5102 Williamsburg Road – One critical violation reported (ham and waffle batter observed at improper temperatures) and no non-critical violations reported.
Yesterday's Diner, 2709 Williamsburg Road – No violations reported.

MAY 1
Brookland Middle School, 9200 Lydell Drive – No violations reported.
Captain D's Seafood, 4800 Williamsburg Road – Two critical violations reported (worker observed handling raw shrimp and proceeding to touch cooked fish with same gloved hand; oysters, shrimp, water inside upright refrigerator observed at improper temperatures, unit found with elevated temperatures, shrimp in process of breading found at improper temperature, no ice visible on product) and five non-critical violations reported.
Checkered Flag Restaurant & Lounge, 4106 Williamsburg Road– One critical violation reported (sausage gravy found dated April 20) and one non-critical violation reported.
Daily Java Coffee House & Cafe, 1404 North Parham Road – No violations reported.
DQ Grill & Chill, 807 East Parham Road – No violations reported.
Fairway Grill at Belmont Golf Course, 1600 Hilliard Road – No violations reported.
Grapevine II Restaurant, 11055 Three Chopt Road – One critical violation reported (dolmades, rice and garlic and oil observed at improper temperatures in prep units) and three non-critical violations reported.
Wendy's Old Fashioned Hamburgers, 2200 East Laburnum Avenue – One critical violation reported (food employee observed chewing gum while filling orders) and five non-critical violations reported.

Ichiban Japanese Cuisine, 10490 Ridgefield Parkway – One critical violation reported (fish, eggs and crab meat observed at improper temperatures in refrigerator under sushi case) and no non-critical violations reported.

Anthem ‘LemonAid’ registration opens


Last summer, hundreds of Anthem LemonAid stands dotted Central Virginia and raised more than $100,000 in support of cancer treatment and research at Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU (CHoR). This July 17-19, Anthem is inviting community members to host an Anthem LemonAid stand in support of the children who are battling the disease. During the past 13 summers, Anthem LemonAid has raised more than $1 million. All funds raised support the Hematology and Oncology Clinic at the Children's Hospital of Richmond at VCU.

Anthem LemonAid is Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals’ signature summer event. It’s free to participate and is designed for children, families, community groups and businesses alike. > Read more.

Tree seedling giveaway planned April 2-3


The Henricopolis Soil & Water Conservation District will sponsor a tree seedling giveaway on April 2 at Dorey Park Shelter 1 from 2:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and on April 3 at Hermitage High School parking lot from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Bare-root tree seedlings are available to Henrico County residents free of charge for the spring planting season.

The following seedling species will be available: apple, kousa dogwood, red maple, river birch, red osier dogwood, loblolly pine, sycamore, bald cypress, white dogwood and redbud. Quantities are limited and trees are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Each participant is allowed up to 10 trees total, not to include more than five of the same species. > Read more.

State provides online directory of Bingo games


Wondering where to go to play Bingo? Wonder no more.

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) recently launched an online directory of permitted bingo games played in Virginia. Listed by locality, more than 400 regular games are available across the state. The directory will be updated monthly and can be found on VDACS’ website at http://www.vdacs.virginia.gov/gaming/index.shtml.
