Race nut

Leonard Tengco, first-place winner of the costume contest at the 2010 Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k, visited Maggiano’s in Short Pump Jan. 5 to help promote the 2011 race.

Tengco said his costume, “Squirrel Chasing a Nut,” was inspired by his experiences with the squirrels that overran his roof and yard when he was living in the Fan.

Now a resident of Virginia Beach, he plans to be back for the April 2 10k with a new, still-top-secret outfit.

Among other visitors to 10k Media Day were members of the on-course musical group, 3rd Wave; representatives from Bon Secours, who have started a 10k training team for post-surgical weight loss patients; and 35-year-old Kevin Pannell, who will be running his first race since a 2009 diagnosis of kidney cancer. Pannell will be among the runners representing VCU Massey Cancer, the official race charity.

Accompany the group to find and document native plants present and blooming in Echo Lake Park on Saturday or take a “Sunday Stroll” at Dorey Park to observe the seasonal changes taking place. Other outdoor events this weekend include the final summer concert at West Broad Village and “Fridays on the Patio” at James River Cellars Winery in Glen Allen. If you’re going to be outside, don’t forget the insect repellent! To learn more about avoiding those pesky mosquitos, check out Henrico County’s “Fight-the-Bite TODAY” event tomorrow.
