A juvenile raccoon found dead in Glen Allen this weekend has tested positive for rabies.

The dead animal was found in the 11000 block of Winfrey Road, just north of the intersection of Greenwood and Woodman roads north of I-295, inside a pen that housed two dogs. Contact between the raccoon and dogs was likely, according to Henrico police. The raccoon was taken to a state lab, which confirmed today that it tested positive for rabies.

The Health Department and the owner of the dogs were notified of the positive test results. Both dogs will be quarantined at the owner's home and already have received booster vaccinations. There have been no further reports of additional human or animal exposures at this time.

Police officials are advising citizens that wild animals behaving abnormally should be reported to Henrico Police at 501-5000. All rabies vaccinations on domestic animals also should be kept current.
