Newsweek names Deep Run, Godwin among ‘America’s Best High Schools’
|
Newsweek magazine recently named Deep Run High School and Mills E. Godwin High School among America’s Best High Schools.
According to its website, to compile the 2012 list of the top high schools in America, Newsweek reached out to principals, superintendents and other administrators at public high schools across the country. In order to be considered for the list, a school had to complete a survey requesting specific data from the 2010-2011 academic year. In all, more than 2,300 schools were assessed to produce the final list of the top 1,000 schools. “It is a tremendous honor for Deep Run High School to be selected as a ‘Best High School’ as ranked by Newsweek magazine,” said Deep Run Principal Lenny Pritchard. “This is the direct result of the outstanding work done by our faculty, our hardworking students, the strong partnership we have with our parents and our community, and the support of the HCPS School Board and Central Office staff.” Newsweek ranked all respondents based on four-year, on-time graduation rate, percent of 2011 graduates accepted to college, AP/IB/AICE tests per student, average SAT and/or ACT score, average AP/IB/AICE exam score and AP/IB/AICE courses offered per student. Data for each of these indicators were standardized using z-scores, in order to measure the relative performance of each school, and then weighted to produce an overall Newsweek score for each school.
