SportClips to Donate to Henrico's 'Team Rescue Mode'
SportClips stores in the Richmond area will donate 10 percent of their total revenue from four days in October to a team of Henrico firefighters who will compete in an international event this November. Henrico's Team Rescue Mode qualified for the event earlier this year but must pay its own way to the competition in Nevada and handle all other event-related expenses itself. SportClips will donate 10 percent of its revenue from Oct. 20, 21, 27 and 28 to the team.

J.R. Tucker Drama Boosters to Hold Yard Sale
The J.R. Tucker High School Drama Boosters will hold their first yard sale on Saturday, Oct. 28 in the school's parking lot from 8 a.m. to noon. Booths are available for $25 until Oct. 16. HCPS Gifted Advisory Council to Meet
The Henrico County Public Schools' Gifted Advisory Council will hold its regular meeting on Thursday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. in the multi-purpose room at the Eastern Government Center, 3820 Nine Mile Road. The meeting is open to the public and interested citizens are invited to attend. Anyone who is disabled and wishes to attend but needs assistance should call Mychael Dickerson at 652-3724.

MOPS to Hold Yard and Bake Sale
Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS) will host its Giant Yard and Bake Sale on Saturday, Oct. 14, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Glen Allen Community Church, 11801 Nuckols Road in Glen Allen.

Books, toys, furniture, music, collectibles and more will be available for purchase. Anyone interested in renting space at the event should contact Nina at 779-3057 or by e-mail at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address). The rain date is Oct. 21.

The MOPS at GACC serves as a support group for mothers of all preschoolers. It meets on the second and fourth Mondays of each month from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Glen Allen Community Church.

First Marker Bank Fundraiser to Benefit AMA Heart Walk
First Market Bank will holds its Third Annual Yard Sale to benefit the American Heart Association's Heart Walk on Saturday, Oct. 7, from 8 a.m. to noon. The event will be held in the parking lot of First Market Square, 2000 Westmoreland Street (behind Richmond Ford on West Broad Street).

Hatcher Memorial Baptist Church to Hold Harvest Fest
Hatcher Memorial Baptist Church in Lakeside will hold its sixth annual Harvest Festival on Saturday, Oct. 8. The event will feature outdoor worship at 10:50 a.m., following Bible Study for all ages at 9:30 a.m.

Exhibits with information and visuals that promote the church's ministries and community offerings will be open from 10 a.m. to 10:50 a.m. and from 12:15 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. A smoked barbecue dinner will be available for $3 per person, and a hot dog dinner will be available for children for $1. The event also will include music.

Following the meal, members of the church will participate in the Franco's Lakeside Avenue 5K Run and Family Walk to benefit the Lakeside Volunteer Rescue Squad. The family walk will be held at 2 p.m. at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden.

ComedySportz to Hold Auditions
ComedySportz, Richmond's longest running improv show, will hold auditions for improvisers on Oct. 9 at 7 p.m. Those who are selected will be trained during a six-week period for six two-hour improv classes.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old. ComedySportz is located in Dumbarton Square Shopping Center at 7115-A Staples Mill Road. For details, call 266-9377.

Short Pump Ruritan Club donates $50k to Virginia War Memorial

The Short Pump Ruritan/Civic Association Foundation, Inc. recently presented a check for $50,000 to the Virginia War Memorial Educational Foundation. The donation will be used to finance the production of a new film about the Vietnam War as part of the War Memorial’s award-winning Virginians at War film series. > Read more.

Fan Care offers heat relief to seniors

Qualifying senior citizens can receive free relief from summer heat through the 23rd annual Fan Care program, which provides fans and cooling assistance to seniors 60 and older in need.

The program is an initiative of Senior Connections, The Capital Area Agency on Aging for seniors who meet income eligibility requirements and have a situation that threatens their health. > Read more.

A community ‘Kaffeehaus’ in Henrico’s Far West End

Born and raised in good old Europe, I am quite familiar with the traditional Austro-Hungarian tradition of the Kaffeehaus, an institution that represents a lifestyle of relaxing and thinking in a familiar environment with coffee, pastry, news, good service, marble tables, subdued sounds like the click-clack of the coffee machine, mugs and plates, conversations among patrons and with staff and a bit of low volume Johann Strauss music.

Oklahoma tornado victims to benefit from Innsbrook concert

The Innsbrook Foundation will present a special concert June 19 at the Innsbrook Snagajob Pavilion to raise funds benefiting the victims of the Moore and Shawnee communities of Oklahoma.

The Innsbrook After Hours RVA Cares event will feature five bands and a family festival in recognition of the many families devastated by the Oklahoma tornadoes on May 20, which killed 23 people, injured 377 others, and left destroyed and damaged homes affecting 33,000 residents. > Read more.

West End residents no longer have to pick between fighting the summer mall crowds for a quick bite or breaking the bank to eat at a fine-dining spot because one Richmond group is bringing both to them.
