Last night, Moody Middle School student Moira Bass read her poem “Shana” at an "An Evening of Poetry," one of the first lady's cultural gatherings at the White House.

The event was hosted by the Obamas in a celebration of American poetry and prose. It was preceded by an afternoon workshop for students from across the country.

First Lady Michelle Obama addressed the students from throughout the country who attended the workshop. During the workshop, the students learned from many of the evening's guests including poets, rappers and singers.

President Obama opened the evening celebration with a greeting, and Bass read her poem aloud.

Bass was selected to participate in the event after her poem won a Silver Medal Award in the Scholastic Writing Competition, a national writing contest.
