Middleton, chief of police, Henrico County; State Emergency Medical Services Advisory Board – Dr. Robin Foster, Division Chairman of Pediatric Emergency Services, Virginia Commonwealth University Health System; and Virginia Port Authority Board of Commissioners – Frank E. Laughon, Jr., chairman emeritus, Richmond Cold Storage; John N. Pullen – president and chief growth officer, Luck Stone Corporation, and Robert M. Stanton, Chairman, Stanton Partners, Inc.

Elizabeth Levy, of Glen Allen, recently was named to the dean’s list with honors for the spring 2011 semester at The College at Brockport, State University of New York in Brockport, N.Y. To be eligible for the Dean’s List with Honors, students must achieve a grade point average of 3.70-3.99.

Ethan Bradley Howes, son of Anita Ramsey and Thurston Howes; and Rebecca Simon Walker, daughter of Thomas and Roslyn Walker, recently graduated from Roanoke College in Salem, Va. Howes earned a bachelor of arts degree in history and is a graduate of Hermitage High School. Walker earned a bachelor of arts degree in sociology and is a graduate of Trinity Episcopal High School.

Carolyn Hall, of Glen Allen, was recently recognized by lia sophia, a direct seller of fashion jewelry, as the 2010-2011 top achiever. This prestigious award honors Hall for outstanding achievement in areas such as sales and recruiting.

Marine Corps John E. Larsen recently graduated from the Marine Corps Basic Combat Engineer Course at Marine Corps Engineer School in Camp Lejeune, N.C. During the five-week course, Larsen received instruction in the fundamentals of engineering support for combat units, including the procedures for building and repairing bridges, roads and field fortifications. He also received training on demolition concepts, land mine warfare and camouflage techniques. Larsen joined the Marine Corps Reserve in April 2010.

Tiarra Brown, of Varina High School; Gates Deppner and Matthew Tyson, of Douglas Freeman High School; and Annie Weidhaas, of Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School, were four of twelve students who recently completed the Virginia Commonwealth University’s Virginia High School Journalism Workshop, a two-week program sponsored by the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund and the Virginia Press Association. The workshop was highlighted by a variety of acclaimed guest speakers and volunteers, including Emmy award-winning journalists and well-versed local editors, many of whom are VCU professors and/or alumni. A majority of the students’ time was spent playing the role of adept journalists from research, interviewing experts and participating in a press conference. Rotary donates to ‘Bright Beginnings’

The Sandston Rotary Club recently donated $1,000 to the Sandston YMCA for its Bright Beginnings program, which helps provide children in need with school supplies for the new school year. > Read more.

Author, child abuse survivor to speak at Henrico event

To help celebrate twenty years of service to advocating for abused and neglected children in Henrico County, Henrico Court Appointed Special Advocates, Inc. (CASA) will host an evening with bestselling author K.L. Randis on Tuesday, Aug. 26, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Belmont Recreation Center in Lakeside.

Randis is best known for her bestselling novel, Spilled Milk, which tells her painful – but ultimately triumphant – personal story of abuse and of child abuse prevention. The book is her first novel.

Philippines ambassador to the US visits Filipino Festival in Henrico


The Ambassador of the Philippines to the United States Jose L. Cuisia, Jr. attended the Ninth Annual Filipino Festival at Our Lady of Lourdes Church earlier this month. Cuisia (pictured above with festival performers) was welcomed by County Manager John Vithoulkas and Brookland District Supervisor Dick Glover (below) at the church, which is located in Lakeside.

While enjoying some of the cultural performances at the festival, the ambassador and his wife had a private lunch with Vithoulkas, Glover, Eldon Burton (an outreach representative from U.S. Senator Mark R. Warner’s Office) and Father James Begley, the pastor of OLL. > Read more.

Cultural Arts Center seeks artists, designs for holiday displays

The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen is seeking artists, crafters, and creative groups for three opportunities allowing creative thinkers and doers to design and display imaginative holiday decorations.

The center is seeking designs for:

• Illumination 2014 – A Festival of Trees: Artists can celebrate the holiday season by creating a one-of-a-kind Christmas tree filled with decorations to suit any unique or traditional theme. Past trees exhibited have included Buzz Lightyear; HEROES; Santa tree; Musicology; and many others. > Read more.
