The Have It Your Way Foundation recently announced it has awarded over $1.4 million in scholarships to a total of 1,258 deserving students nationwide as part of the 11th annual Burger King Scholars Program. Among the winners were 3 students from Henrico: Sage Janulis and Taylor Elliott, of Freeman High School, and Nikita Bhojani, of Henrico High School. Each received a $1,000 scholarship award in recognition of their outstanding academic achievement, as well as grade point average, work experience, extracurricular activities and community service. Created in memory of Burger King co-founder James W. McLamore, the BURGER KING® Scholars Program has awarded a total of 15,070 scholarships, representing $15.4 million in awards since the program’s inception in 2000.

Navy Seamen Jameel A. Harris, a 2010 graduate of Henrico High School, and Brittney C. Cheatham, granddaughter of Elizabeth F. Cheatham of Glen Allen, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill. During the eight-week program, Harris and Cheatham completed a variety of training, which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, physical fitness and shipboard and aircraft safety.

Bob McDonnell recently appointed the following local residents to state boards and commissions: Advisory Committee on Juvenile Justice – Sergeant Carol Adams, Richmond Police Department, and Terone B. Green, executive director of the Virginia Alliance; Board for Barbers and Cosmetology – Daniella Tsamouras, owner of Spa 310; Board of Dentistry (citizen seat) – Myra Howard, agent/intern with State Farm Insurance; Child Day Care Council – Terrie E. Tusing, family educator at Commonwealth Parenting; Fair Housing Board – Linda G. Broady-Myers, retired; Science Museum of Virginia Board of Trustees – David Botkins, director of media relations for Dominion Virginia Power; and Virginia Workforce Council – Mark A. Herzog, executive director of Virginia Biotechnology Association, and J.E. “Tony” Rigali, lead organizer for Virginia Pipe Trades Association.

Henrico Junior 4-H camp registration open

For parents looking to keep their kids outside and away from the video games this summer, the Virginia Cooperative Extension is still accepting registrations for the 2013 Henrico Junior 4-H Camp.

The camp will be held June 17-23, and is open to boys and girls ages 9-13. A total of 10 spaces for boys and 27 spaces for girls remain available, and registration is open until May 24. The cost is $230, which includes lodging, meals, programs, instructional materials and charter bus transportation. > Read more.

Popular Short Pump spot offers upscale comfort, flavors
The Wine Loft opened in West Broad Village in January 2010, offering a full bar with wine, beer, spirits and a kitchen with tapas-style snacks. It offers a seasonal patio area along Whittall Way. Its walk-in wine “humidor” in plain view from the bar offers more than 85 wines by the glass ($6-$65) and about 250 by the bottle ($28 and up), with some emphasis on Italian wines.
