Paris McCray, of Richmond, recently completed the Freedom Alliance Military Leadership Academy, a leadership program based on the curriculum of the U.S. military. In its tenth year, the two-week academy couples an intense leadership training environment with challenging and educational experiences like a tour of the Aviation Logistics School and simulators at Ft. Eustis, a Leadership Reaction Course, and land navigation and fire team tactics. The cadets also visit historical sites, such as the monuments in Washington, D.C., to maximize lessons on selfless service and celebrating America’s achievements. The Richmond Association of REALTORS® recently held its annual Installation Reception and Awards Ceremony at Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens in Henrico. The 2011 award recipients are: A. Kenton Muhleman, Jr. Scholarship Award – Jennifer E. Jennings, Keller Williams; Laverne A. Boschen, Jr. Educator of the Year Award – Donna O. Procise, Long & Foster; REALTOR® of the Year Award – R. Scott Shaheen, Long & Foster; Adrian L. Bendheim, Jr. Sales Associate of the Year Award – Nancy Cheely, Joyner Fine Properties; C. Porter Vaughan, Jr. Outstanding Service Award – William Stanley, Long & Foster; and Civic Leader of the Year Award – Stanton L. Thalhimer, RE/MAX Commonwealth. Also at the ceremony, Scott Ruth, of Long & Foster, was named the 2012 president of the Richmond Association of REALTORS® and Shanna Wiseman, of Parr & Abernathy Realty, Inc., was named the 2012 president of the Central Virginia multiple listing service. Joining Ruth and Wiseman in leading the association and MLS in 2012 will be President-Elect for RAR/CVR MLS Linda Staples Terry of Tranzon Fox Auctions; Vice President Mark Joyner of Napier REALTORS® ERA; and Immediate Past President Cheryl Hamm of Joyner Fine Properties. Scott Shaheen, with Long & Foster, will chair the 2012 Broker Council and serve on the Board of Directors. The newly elected Board of Directors members are David Adams, Gary Duda and Lummie Jones for RAR/CVR MLS, and Al Wells and Kathy Diradour for CVR MLS. Navy Seaman Apprentice D’Angelo N. Harris, son of Yvette R. Harris, and Navy Seaman Christina L. Kuzenkova, daughter of Cheryl L. and David W. Bowles, of Richmond, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill. During the eight-week program, Harris and Kuzenkova completed a variety of training which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, shipboard and aircraft safety and physical fitness. The capstone event of boot camp is "Battle Stations,” an exercise that gives recruits the skills and confidence they need to succeed in the fleet. "Battle Stations" is designed to galvanize the basic warrior attributes of sacrifice, dedication, teamwork and endurance in each recruit through the practical application of basic Navy skills and the core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment. Its distinctly ''Navy'' flavor was designed to take into account what it means to be a Sailor. Harris is a 2008 graduate of Samuel W. Wolfson High School in Jacksonville, Fla. And Kuzenkova is a 2007 graduate of J.R. Tucker High School in Henrico.

Lions Club donates backpacks to elementary school

The Richmond West Breakfast Lions Club (based in western Henrico) recently donated 59 backpacks to the Westover Hills Elementary School on Jahnke Road.

Glen Allen student to perform at Carnegie Hall

Thanks to a first-place win in The American Protege International Vocal Competition 2014, Glen Allen High School student Matija Tomas will travel to New York City to perform at Carnegie Hall in December.

At the first-place winners recital in Weill Hall, Matija will perform Giacomo Puccini’s opera aria, “Chi il bel sogna di doretta.” She will perform with other vocalists from around the world and have the opportunity to win other awards and scholarships.

Locally, Thomas has performed with Richmond’s renowned Glorious Christmas Nights, Christian Youth Theatre, and WEAG’s Urban Gospel Youth Choir. > Read more.

Gayton Baptist Church dedicates new outreach center


The John Rolfe YMCA and Gayton Baptist Church have partnered in an effort to bring greater health and wellness opportunities to the community.

Through this partnership, the John Rolfe Y will run Youth Winter Sports programs, including basketball and indoor soccer, in Gayton’s newly renovated $5.5 million outreach center that features a new gymnasium, youth and teen space, social space with café, meeting space and full service commercial kitchen. > Read more.

CAT Theatre to host auditions

CAT Theatre will hold auditions for Book of Days on Sunday, Oct. 26 and Monday, Oct. 27, at 7 p.m. each day. Auditions will be held at CAT Theatre, 319 North Wilkinson Road in Henrico. Book of Days will run Jan. 23-Feb. 7 and is one of CAT’s submissions to the Acts of Faith Festival.

Book of Days, by Pulitzer Prize winner Lanford Wilson is an exploration of faith, justice, and corruption, amidst the backdrop of murder – and community theatre – in small town America. Book of Days was first written for and produced by Jeff Daniels Purple Rose Theatre Company of Michigan.

Director Leslie Cline is seeking five females between the ages of 20-65 and seven males between the ages of 24-65. > Read more.

CAT Theatre opens 51st season Oct. 24


CAT Theatre’s 51st season will open with Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure, which will run Oct. 24 through Nov. 8. The play is based on the original 1899 play by William Gillette and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and adapted by Steven Dietz, and was the winner of the 2007 Edgar Award for Best Mystery Play.

The story follows Holmes, whose career as the world’s greatest detective seems to have reached its end until he is confronted with a case far too tempting to ignore. When the King of Bohemia faces blackmail by famed opera singer, Irene Adler, Holmes and his companion Dr. Watson find themselves falling into the trap of evil genius Professor Moriarty. > Read more.
