The Richmond Tennis Association (RTA) recently recognized patrons, players and institutions for their contributions to tennis in Richmond at its biennial Richmond Tennis Hall of Fame Induction Dinner. Inductees to the Class of 2011 are Fred Bruner, Junie Chatman, Bitsy Harrison, Gayle H. Marlowe (posthumously), Lindsay Wortham and Anthem Blue Cross & Blue Shield. To be eligible for the Hall of Fame, candidates must have at least ten years of distinct tennis involvement in the capital city area. While any nomination is accepted, an RTA committee makes the final selection, and it is based upon two categories of recognition: players, in which case the honor is based on records of outstanding competitive achievements with consideration to sportsmanship and character, and non-players, which focuses on individuals and entities making outstanding contributions via length of service, support and/or dedication to the sport. The latter category is designed to include volunteers, sponsors, coaches, umpires, writers and others. The dinner’s keynote speaker was Roy Emerson, a multiple Grand Slam winner.
