Milestones


Col. Donald B. Kaiserman, of Henrico, has been elected as chairman of the Virginia Joint Leadership Council (JLC). The JLC is recognized as the leading Veterans Council advocating for the military community in the Commonwealth and “Speaks with a Single Voice” for the more than 820,000 veterans living in Virginia. Kaiserman had previously served as the JLC legislative chair and as vice chair. Kaiserman is also president of The Council of 18 Chapters of the Military Officers Association of America, serves on the Virginia Board of Veterans Service (being vetted by Gov. McDonnell), the Virginia War Memorial Board of Directors and the Fort Lee Retiree Council.

Tracie Grady, vice president of member services, recently celebrated 10 years of service with Eisenman & Associates, Inc. Grady started with E&A in August 2002 and was promoted to her current position in the fall of 2011. Prior to her employment with E&A, Grady was the administrator at the Virginia Association of Elementary School Principals for over five years. She is a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University with a bachelor of science in Business with a concentration in Human Resources. E&A is a full-service association management and meeting consulting firm based in Glen Allen.

Bob McDonnell recently appointed the following local residents to Virginia boards and commissions: Board of Social Work – Joseph Walsh, of Richmond, professor of social work at Virginia Commonwealth University; Board of Trustees of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts – W. Birch Douglass, III, of Richmond, partner at McGuireWoods; Terrell Luck Harrigan, of Richmond, community volunteer; and Satya Rangarajan, of Glen Allen, co-founder of Health Diagnostic Laboratory, Inc.; Citizen’s Advisory Council for Furnishing and Interpreting the Executive Mansion – Bryan Clark Green, of Richmond, director of historic preservation for Commonwealth Architects; Virginia Interagency Coordinating Council – Lissa Power-deFur, of Richmond, professor of communication sciences and disorders at Longwood University; and Virginia Resources Authority Board of Directors – Dena Frith Moore, of Richmond.

The University of Richmond’s all-male a cappella group, The Octaves, has been featured on a two-disc album showcasing the best a cappella tracks released by collegiate groups from around the world. The Octaves track, “The Show Goes On,” as performed by Lupe Fiasco, is featured on “Voices Only 2012.” A new “Voices Only” album has been released each fall since 2005 and includes songs recorded, mastered or released during the previous year. Songs are chosen for a variety of reasons, including featured soloists, production excellence, arrangements and more. The 2012 album is available on iTunes. Eight’s enough? Crowded race for 56th District develops


Following the retirement of Delegate Peter Farrell [R-56th District], a number of candidates have thrown their hats into the ring to vie for the open seat in the Virginia General Assembly district, which contains a portion of Henrico’s Far West End.

Democratic challengers include Lizzie Basch and Melissa Dart, while Republican contenders include George Goodwin, Matt Pinsker, Graven Craig, Surya Dhakar, Jay Prendergrast and John McGuire. In addition to a section of Henrico, the district also includes portions of Goochland and Spotsylvania County, as well as all of Louisa County. > Read more.

On the trail to Awareness


Twenty-five teams, composed of some 350 participants, gathered at Dorey Park in Varina April 8 for the Walk Like MADD 5k, to benefit Mothers Against Drunk Driving Virginia. The event raised more than $35,000, with more funds expected to come in through May 7. > Read more.

Leadership Metro Richmond honors St. Joseph’s Villa CEO


Leadership Metro Richmond honored St. Joseph's Villa CEO Kathleen Burke Barrett, a 2003 graduate of LMR, with its 2017 Ukrop Community Vision Award during its annual spring luncheon April 6.

The award honors a LMR member who demonstrates a purposeful vision, a sense of what needs to be done, clear articulation with concern and respect for others with demonstrated action and risk-taking. > Read more.

Glen Allen H.S. takes second in statewide economics competition

Glen Allen H.S. was among six top schools in the state to place in the 2017 Governor’s Challenge in Economics and Personal Finance.

Taught by Patricia Adams, the Glen Allen H.S. team was runner-up in the Economics division, in which teams faced off in a Quiz Bowl. > Read more.

Glen Allen native serves aboard Navy’s most advanced submarine


A 2007 Deep Run High School graduate and Glen Allen, Virginia native is serving in the U.S. Navy as part of a crew working aboard one of the world’s most advanced ballistic missile submarines, USS Tennessee, Gold Crew.

Petty Officer 2nd Class Michael Uhl, a machinist’s mate, serves aboard the Kings Bay-based boat, one of 14 Ohio-class ballistic missile submarines.

As a machinist's mate, Uhl is responsible for operating and maintaining the auxiliary engineering equipment aboard the submarine. > Read more.

The Henrico County office of Virginia Cooperative Extension and the Henrico Master Gardeners will present a series of free workshops this spring to help residents care for their lawns and gardens. The third workshop, “Planning and Planting the Perennial Flower Garden,” will take place from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Deep Run Recreation Center. The session will focus on laying out a garden, selecting plants and seeds, and strategies for growing flowers that return each spring with little maintenance. To register, call 501-5160. Full text
