Unity Bowling, International Baccalaureate student at Fairfield Middle School and Miss Peninsula's Outstanding Teen 2012, has been named a regional winner in the Kohl's Cares Scholarship program. Bowling was awarded a $1,000 scholarship and is now eligible for one of the national level awards and an additional $9,000 scholarship. An advocate for literacy, she has worked with local elementary schools and head start/preschool programs, including the Henrico County Preschool Program, and she reads at the Children’s Museum of Richmond regularly. Bowling also collected and distributed more than 3,000 books to local organizations. Some English/Spanish books were also sent to the Dominican Republic to help create a library.


Henry Edward Qian, of Glen Allen, recently was named to the dean’s list for the spring 2012 semester at the University of Iowa. To be eligible for the dean’s list, students must earn a grade point average of 3.5 or higher.


Call Federal Credit Union has awarded members Myles Hilliard, a graduate of Deep Run High School, and Taylor Melton, a graduate of Tucker High School, $1,000 scholarships through its Alice S. Pearce Scholarship program. Students were selected based upon scholarly merit, video or essay submission and extracurricular involvement including community service.


A team from the Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School placed second in the nation in the “We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution” national finals, which took place in April in Washington, DC. This is the third year that a team from MLWGS has placed in the top three in the nation. “We the People” team members study a broad range of topics related to American government and constitutionalism and prepare for simulated congressional hearings, during which judges ask questions and score units based on knowledge and articulation. Henrico students on the team were: Sameer Sarkar, Eileen Wang, Kathryn Marqueen, Andrea Yeh and Jesse Zhao, Class of 2012; and John Darr, Gray Whisnant and Matt Ruskan, Class of 2013.


Taylor Stephen Wilson, of Richmond, recently was named to the dean’s list for the spring 2012 semester at Wofford College in Spartanburg, S.C. To be eligible for the dean’s list, students must earn a grade point average of 3.6 or higher.


Davis & Elkins College women's basketball team member Amy Turner has been named to the commissioner's honor roll by the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for the 2011-12 athletic year. The commissioner's honor roll recognizes junior and senior student-athletes who have obtained a 3.3 cumulative GPA at the end of the term in which their sport concluded. Turner, a physical education major, is the daughter of Marcus and Diane Turner, of Glen Allen.

Bob McDonnell has appointed local residents to several boards and commissions: Board of Health Professions – Jeffrey Levin, of Richmond, general dentist with Commonwealth Prosthdontics; and Blair H. Nelsen, of Richmond, owner of Nelsen Funeral Home; State Board of Health – Dr. John W. Seeds, of Richmond, physician educator at VCU School of Medicine; State Rehabilitation Advisory Council – Julie Triplett, of Henrico, disability rights advocate for the Virginia Office of Protection and Advocacy; Virginia Board for People with Disabilities – Jessica Gainous Philips, of Henrico, vice president and CEO of Commonwealth Autism Service; and Virginia-Israel Advisory Board – Paul H. Grossman, Jr., of Richmond, director of international trade and investment for the Virginia Economic Development Partnership; and Jay M. Ipson, of Richmond, president and executive director of the Virginia Holocaust Museum and Holocaust survivor.

Varina Ruritans honor police, fire officials and community members

The Varina Ruritan Club celebrated its 80th anniversary with a banquet Nov. 10, during which it presented several annual awards, including Policeman of the Year – to Henrico Officer Aaron M. Lancaster (top) – and Firefighter of the Year – to Julian T. Lipscomb (second from top).

The club also received a plaque from the Henrico Division of Fire (third from top) expressing the division's appreciation for the club and its support of fire prevention programs. > Read more.

The Rink to open at WBV Nov. 14

The grand opening of The Rink outdoor ice skating rink at West Broad Village will be held Saturday, Nov. 14, beginning at 11 a.m. with skating and family activities. At 4 p.m., grand opening festivities – featuring exhibitions of ice sculpting, ice skating and cheering, as well as fire pits, costumed characters, and food vendors – will begin. Skating costs are $8 for children and $10 for adults, with $4 skate rentals available. Parking is free. The Rink is located at 3939 Duckling Drive, Glen Allen.
