Unity Bowling, International Baccalaureate student at Fairfield Middle School and Miss Peninsula's Outstanding Teen 2012, has been named a regional winner in the Kohl's Cares Scholarship program. Bowling was awarded a $1,000 scholarship and is now eligible for one of the national level awards and an additional $9,000 scholarship. An advocate for literacy, she has worked with local elementary schools and head start/preschool programs, including the Henrico County Preschool Program, and she reads at the Children’s Museum of Richmond regularly. Bowling also collected and distributed more than 3,000 books to local organizations. Some English/Spanish books were also sent to the Dominican Republic to help create a library.

Henry Edward Qian, of Glen Allen, recently was named to the dean’s list for the spring 2012 semester at the University of Iowa. To be eligible for the dean’s list, students must earn a grade point average of 3.5 or higher.

Call Federal Credit Union has awarded members Myles Hilliard, a graduate of Deep Run High School, and Taylor Melton, a graduate of Tucker High School, $1,000 scholarships through its Alice S. Pearce Scholarship program. Students were selected based upon scholarly merit, video or essay submission and extracurricular involvement including community service.

A team from the Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School placed second in the nation in the “We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution” national finals, which took place in April in Washington, DC. This is the third year that a team from MLWGS has placed in the top three in the nation. “We the People” team members study a broad range of topics related to American government and constitutionalism and prepare for simulated congressional hearings, during which judges ask questions and score units based on knowledge and articulation. Henrico students on the team were: Sameer Sarkar, Eileen Wang, Kathryn Marqueen, Andrea Yeh and Jesse Zhao, Class of 2012; and John Darr, Gray Whisnant and Matt Ruskan, Class of 2013.

Taylor Stephen Wilson, of Richmond, recently was named to the dean’s list for the spring 2012 semester at Wofford College in Spartanburg, S.C. To be eligible for the dean’s list, students must earn a grade point average of 3.6 or higher.

Davis & Elkins College women's basketball team member Amy Turner has been named to the commissioner's honor roll by the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for the 2011-12 athletic year. The commissioner's honor roll recognizes junior and senior student-athletes who have obtained a 3.3 cumulative GPA at the end of the term in which their sport concluded. Turner, a physical education major, is the daughter of Marcus and Diane Turner, of Glen Allen.
