The law firm of Allen, Allen, Allen & Allen has announced 50 winners of its 2012 Hometown Heroes award, including the following local residents: Jim Baber, Willard Douglas, Ken & Gail Henshaw, Andy Inge, Anne McDonnell, Marianne Rollings and Russ Warnick, of Richmond; Jonathan Cherry and Alan Tuck, of Sandston; and Kenton Scearce, of Glen Allen. Nominations for the Hometown Heroes award were accepted April 16 to May 25. Each hero selected has a unique and inspiring story of giving in some capacity, either on a large scale or through small everyday acts of kindness. The Academy of General Dentistry, a professional association of more than 37,000 general dentists, has awarded Dr. Cheryl Billingsley the 2012 Mastership Award. The award is the highest honor available at the AGD; Billingsley completed 1,100 hours of continuing dental education to accomplish this goal. A 1990 graduate of the Medical College of Virginia, VCU School of Dentistry, she has provided dentistry in her practice for 22 years in the Short Pump area.

Maya Payne Smart has been selected as the 2012 chair of James River Writers, a nonprofit organization for writers. Smart will lead JRW’s executive committee, which also includes: Greg Weatherford, vice chair; Gigi Amateau, treasurer; and Katharine Herndon, secretary. Other board members for 2012 are: Kristi Tuck Austin, Carol Billingsley, Diane Black, Ellen F. Brown, Janice Campbell, Shawna Christos, Christina S. Draper, Ryan Frazier, Julie Geen, Charles Gerena, Lee Gimpel, Jessica Ronky Haddad, Douglas Jones, Madeline Mayhood, Rebecca Joines Schinsky, Derome Scott Smith and Kris Spisak.

Kohl’s Department Stores’ Kohl’s Cares Scholarship Program recently recognized more than 2,200 young volunteers nationwide who have made a positive impact in their communities through volunteerism. Fifty-eight youth from Virginia, including Ishani Premaratne, of Glen Allen, will receive a $50 Kohl’s gift card and the chance to win a $1,000 regional scholarship. Ten national winners will each receive a total of $10,000 in scholarships and a $1,000 donation to a nonprofit of the winner’s choice.

Branden Thomas Katona, of Henrico, recently was named to the president’s honor roll for the spring 2012 semester at University of Oklahoma Norman in Norman, Okla. To be eligible for the president’s honor roll, students must earn a 4.0 grade point average.

Noozhat Nashir, of Glen Allen, recently was named to the dean’s list for the spring 2012 semester at Wake Forest University in Winston Salem, N.C.

Amy Turner, daughter of Marcus and Diane Turner, of Glen Allen, recently was named to the dean’s list for the spring 2012 semester at Davis & Elkins College in Elkins, W.V. To be eligible for the dean’s list, students must earn a grade point average of at least 3.6. Turner is a physical education major.

Elizabeth Levy, of Glen Allen, recently was named to the dean’s list for the spring 2012 semester at the College of Brockport, State University of New York, in Brockport, N.Y. To be eligible for the dean’s list, students must earn a grade point average of 3.4 to 3.69.

Dylan Nowak, of Glen Allen, recently was named to the dean’s list for the spring 2012 semester at Roger Williams University in Bristol, R.I. To be eligible for the dean’s list, students must earn a 3.4 or higher grade point average. Nowak is a psychology major.

Timothy West, of Glen Allen, recently was named to the dean’s list for the spring 2012 semester at the University of Delaware in Newark, Del. To be eligible for the dean’s list, students must earn a grade point average of 3.33 or higher.

Robert Learned Barry, of Richmond, recently graduated from Denison University in Granville, Ohio. He received a bachelor of arts degree.

Richmond Solar Co-op sign ups end April 30


The sign up period for the Richmond Community Solar Co-op will close on April 30. Nearly 150 homeowners and businesses have joined the group to save money and make going solar easier. The group has started installations and is working with VA SUN to learn about solar technology and the process of going solar.

“If you’ve ever thought about going solar, this is a great opportunity to do so,” said Sekar Veerappan Co-op member and the group’s first installation. “Working with the group helps members learn about going solar and make an informed decision.” > Read more.

YMCA branches to host ‘Healthy Kids Day’ Apr. 29-30


The YMCA of Greater Richmond will host its "Healthy Kids Day" April 29-30 at all local branches.

The event is part of the Y's national initiative to improve families' health and well-being.

Each event features games, healthy snacks, arts and crafts and physical activities, among other events. Its goal is to motivate and teach families how to develop healthy routines at home. > Read more.

Walk MS, an annual charity run for multiple sclerosis, and the third annual Movin’ & Shakin’ 5K, to benefit the VCU Parkinson’s and Movement Disorders Center, both take place in Innsbrook tomorrow. Another charity event, the CASA Superhero Run, will be held at St. Joseph’s Villa. On Sunday, live music can be found at Belmont Recreation Center, featuring the John Winn Quartet, and at Shady Grove United Methodist Church, where pianist Sylvia Cooper will be performing.
