Milestones


Kevin Zhan, an eighth grader at George H. Moody Middle School, will represent Virginia at the 24th annual National Geographic Bee. Zhan is one of only 54 students remaining in the nationwide competition, culled down from more than 5 million participants. The top 10 finalists will compete in the May 24 final round, moderated by Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek, and taped to air that evening on the National Geographic Channel.

Marine Corps Pvt. Kalvon S. Bowman, son of Sheba and Rickey Bowman, of Richmond, and Keith Andres, of Henrico, recently completed 12 weeks of basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot in Parris Island, S.C. Bowman, Andres and fellow recruits endured rigorous physical training as well as numerous hours in classroom and field assignments, which included learning first aid, uniform regulations, combat water survival, marksmanship, hand-to-hand combat and assorted weapons training. Bowman and Andres ended the training phase with The Crucible, a 54-hour team evolution culminating in an emotional ceremony in which recruits are presented the Marine Corps Emblem and addressed as “Marines” for the first time.

Dalton M. Renick, son of Mark and Janice Renick, of Glen Allen, recently was initiated into the Gamma Chapter of Chi Beta Phi, a national honorary science society, at Hampden-Sydney College. A biology major, Dalton is a graduate of Deep Run High School.

Stephanie Leann Simmons and her mother Terry L. Simmons, of Henrico, both recently graduated from Piedmont Virginia Community College in Charlottesville, Va. Both mother and daughter plan to pursue teaching careers at Old Dominion University.

Shannon Elizabeth Gillikin, of Henrico, recently graduated from Jefferson College of Health Sciences. She received a bachelor of science degree from the nursing program.

Boleman Law Firm, whose Richmond office is located in eastern Henrico, recently received the Outstanding Business Award from LINC (Legal Information Network for Cancer). Founder and CEO G.R. “Rusty” Boleman III established the Boleman Law Firm with his wife Gayle in 1991. The firm’s practice is limited to consumer bankruptcy.

Brandon Wesley Rorer, of Glen Allen, recently was named to president’s list for the spring 2012 semester at King College in Bristol, Tenn. To be eligible for the president’s list, students must earn a perfect 4.0 grade point average.

The Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants (VSCPA) recently announced its officers and board of directors for the 2012-13 fiscal year: Chair – John Montoro, principal at The Bookkeeping Department; Chair-elect – James Shepherd, of Verus Financial Partners, Inc.; Vice-chair – Roy Peters, of Feed More, Inc.; Vice-chair – James Phillips, of KPMG; and at-large board members – Staci Henshaw, auditor of public accounts in Richmond; A. Marshall Northington, of Wells, Coleman & Company, LLP; and Gary Romer, of Dixon Hughes Goodman, LLP in Glen Allen.

Savannah Sargent, of Richmond, recently was named to the dean’s list for the 2012 spring semester at Brevard College in Brevard, N.C. To be eligible for the dean’s list, students must earn a grade point average of 3.5 or higher.

Robert J. Daniels, of Glen Allen, and Stacy M. Snellings, of Henrico, recently graduated from Coastal Carolina University in Conway, S.C. Daniels received a bachelor of science degree. Snellings received a bachelor of science degree in business administration.

The Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants (VSCPA) recently recognized 42 members with its 2012 Life Member Award. The award recognizes those who have been members of the VSCPA for more than 40 continuous years. Henrico members awarded life member status for 2012 include: Donald Coleman, Sr., of Glen Allen; and Stephen Dickinson, Ruth Harris, Daniel Pharr, O. Ralph Puccinelli, Jr.; Roy Reynolds and Michael Taylor, of Richmond.

Raiders help ‘Stir It Up!’

Among the activities featured at Stir It Up!, a fundraiser and awareness raiser held May 5 at Deep Run H.S., was the opportunity for youngsters – including this young fan pictured with player Raibonne Charles – to play catch with members of the Richmond Raiders professional indoor football team. > Read more.

Henrico Junior 4-H camp registration open

For parents looking to keep their kids outside and away from the video games this summer, the Virginia Cooperative Extension is still accepting registrations for the 2013 Henrico Junior 4-H Camp.

The camp will be held June 17-23, and is open to boys and girls ages 9-13. A total of 10 spaces for boys and 27 spaces for girls remain available, and registration is open until May 24. The cost is $230, which includes lodging, meals, programs, instructional materials and charter bus transportation. > Read more.

Veteran restaurateur set to open in Short Pump

Tran’s Pho 1 Grill will serve Vietnamese fare
After nearly a year out of the restaurant industry, a well known 30-year Henrico restaurateur is ready to open up his fifth venture in Short Pump.

Paul Tran, along with his wife Ellen will open up Pho 1 Grill, a Vietnamese restaurant, in June in the Towne Center West Shopping Center.

Tran has been serving up Vietnamese food since the mid-’80s, his first being Que Huong on Rigsby Road. He also owned Mr. Chan’s on Horsepen Road and Saigon Gourmet on Hull Street Road. > Read more.

Popular Short Pump spot offers upscale comfort, flavors
The Wine Loft opened in West Broad Village in January 2010, offering a full bar with wine, beer, spirits and a kitchen with tapas-style snacks. It offers a seasonal patio area along Whittall Way. Its walk-in wine “humidor” in plain view from the bar offers more than 85 wines by the glass ($6-$65) and about 250 by the bottle ($28 and up), with some emphasis on Italian wines.
